Jizao Dan (Auspicious Stove Erysipelas)
This erysipelas spreads from the head towards the back of the neck, presenting with redness and swelling. This is caused by wind-heat pathogenic factors affecting the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian (Foot-Taiyang Bladder Channel). The swollen area will inevitably be hot and painful, and sometimes the whole body may also be feverish. Internally, it is appropriate to treat with Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia Decoction for Unimpeded Circulation) modified according to symptoms. Externally, it is appropriate to use powder prepared from Adzuki Bean (Vigna angularis) and Chinese Privet Bark (Ligustri Cortex), mixed with egg white or wine, and applied to the affected area for immediate cure.
Guihuo Dan (Ghost Fire Erysipelas)
This erysipelas originates on the face, presenting with redness and swelling. This is caused by internal wind-heat in the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Treatment should employ Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) added with Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng), Schizonepeta Spike (Jingjie), Mint Leaf (Bohe), Licorice Root (Gancao), Mulberry Root Bark (Sangbpi), and Kudzu Root (Gegen). Externally, apply powder prepared from Dragon's Liver Earth (Fulonggan, i.e., Caulis Cinnamomi Cassiae Ash or specifically Zao Xin Tu) mixed with egg white to the affected area for immediate cure. Another prescription uses Bo San (Cypress Powder) mixed with honey for application, which yields even better results.
Tianhuo Dan (Heavenly Fire Erysipelas)
This erysipelas originates on the spine, presenting with redness, swelling, heat, and pain. This is caused by heat-toxin in the Kidney Pulse combined with wind-heat in the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. Treatment should employ Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia Decoction for Unimpeded Circulation), removing Rhubarb Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao), and Talcum (Huashi), and adding Notopterygium Root (Qianghuo). Externally, take aged wax sheep fat (stored for two to three years), melt it, mix with Qianghuo powder, and apply to the affected area for relief.
Tianzao Dan (Heavenly Stove Erysipelas)
This erysipelas originates on both arms, presenting with redness, swelling, and a slight yellowish hue, or occurring on only one arm. These are all caused by wind-heat in the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. Internally, administer Jiedu Tang (Detoxification Decoction) added with Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng), Schizonepeta Spike (Jingjie), Mint Leaf (Bohe), and Licorice Root (Gancao). Externally, apply Chonghe Gao (Harmonizing Ointment). Another prescription involves burning willow branches to ash, grinding them into powder, mixing with water, and applying to the affected area.
Shuiji Dan (Water Shock Erysipelas)
This erysipelas originates on both flanks, presenting with puffy swelling, redness, and heat. This is caused by wind-heat in the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. Treatment should employ Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) added with White Peony Root (Baishao), Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng), and Schizonepeta Spike (Jingjie). Externally, take iron filings and feces from a pregnant sow, burn them to ash, mix with wax water, and apply to the affected area.
Any infant developing erysipelas within one hundred days after birth, regardless of the type, will inevitably die.
Huci Dan (Hu Ci Erysipelas)
This erysipelas originates above the umbilicus, presenting with yellowish swelling. This is caused by heat and dampness in the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel). Internally, administer Sanhuang Jiedu Tang (Three Yellows Detoxification Decoction), adding Akebia Stem (Mutong), Red Peony Root (Chishao), Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao), Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng), and Schizonepeta Spike (Jingjie).
