Infant Drooping Carbuncle (a carbuncle occurring on the anterior throat, hanging down like a bead) initially presents with nodular swelling at the front of the throat, red in color and painful. This is caused by the coagulation of accumulated heat; it is appropriate to puncture and drain it, administer Wufu Huadu Dan (Five Blessings Detoxifying Pill), and apply Bingpeng San (Bingpian and Borax Powder) to the affected area.
[Note] This condition arises above the anterior throat, hanging down like a bead, with redness, swelling, and pain, preventing the infant from suckling milk. After three or four days, it is appropriate to puncture with a needle one to two fen deep to discharge pus and blood, after which the swelling and pain will subside. This condition results from the coagulation of accumulated heat; it is appropriate to take Wufu Huadu Dan (Five Blessings Detoxifying Pill); additionally, apply Bingpeng San (Bingpian and Borax Powder) to the carbuncle site three times daily. The nursing mother should avoid fishy odors and spicy foods.

Bingpeng San (See section on Mouth Ulceration / Thrush)
Fetal Wind (also known as Fetal Redness, referring to the condition where newborn skin is red as if scalded or burned) initially presents with red skin, resembling the appearance of being splashed with hot water or burned by fire. This condition stems from excessive accumulated heat in the pregnant mother; taking Qingwei Tang (Stomach-Clearing Decoction) will be effective.
[Note] This condition is also named Fetal Redness. When the infant is first born, the body is hot and the skin is red, resembling the appearance of being splashed with hot water or burned by fire. This is caused by the pregnant mother overeating pungent, aromatic, and warming foods, leading to accumulated heat in the Spleen and Stomach. The nursing mother should take Qingwei Tang (Stomach-Clearing Decoction), and the infant may drink a small amount. If only the external skin is red, use Gypsum (Shigao) ground into fine powder for external application. If there is no redness, it is due to Spleen deficiency in the pregnant mother; use Rice Flour (Jingmi Fen) for external application. If the infant is older, able to eat rice and flour, and presents with body heat and red skin, this is due to internal steaming of Fu-heat and external invasion of dampness, named Yulan Chuang (Jade-Rotting Sore). It is appropriate to use Ruyi Jinhuang San (Ruyi Golden Yellow Powder), mixed with honey water for external application, and internally take Daochi Tang (Daochi Decoction) for effectiveness.
Qingwei Tang (See section on Tooth Bleeding)
Ruyi Jinhuang San (See section on Swollen Ulcers)
Daochi Tang (See section on Mouth Ulceration)
Umbilical Sore occurs when the infant's umbilicus is injured by water and dampness; applying ash from burnt grass paper is most beneficial. If it does not heal for a long time, wind pathogen invades, and one must vigilantly prevent the onset of Wind Epilepsy.
[Note] This condition is caused by water-dampness injuring the umbilicus. If it persists without healing, it may develop into convulsions, also due to external invasion of wind pathogen, potentially transforming into Wind Epilepsy. It is appropriate to apply ash from large sheets of grass paper, or add Alum (Kufan); or add equal parts of ash from calcined Dragon Bone (Longgu), mixed with a small amount of Musk (Shexiang), sprinkled on the lesion for immediate effect.
Umbilical Protrusion arises from accumulated heat in the fetus, primarily due to improper dietary regulation by the pregnant mother. The infant's umbilicus protrudes, becoming swollen, red, and enlarged. It is appropriate to clear the heat of both mother and child to restore the umbilicus to its normal position.
[Note] This condition manifests as the infant's umbilicus protruding, appearing red, swollen, and vacuously enlarged. This is because the pregnant mother failed to regulate properly; while in the womb, the infant was affected by the mother's accumulated heat, causing the umbilicus to swell after birth. It is appropriate to clear the heat of mother and child; the infant's umbilicus need not be treated externally, lest it cause harm. If after ten days the infant's umbilicus suddenly swells, appearing inflated but not red, making a slight sound when pressed, or crying due to palpitations and fright, it is appropriate to use Baishaoyao Tang (White Peony Root Decoction) added with Coix Seed (Yiyiren) for the infant to take, and externally apply Waixiaosan (External Dissolving Powder) for recovery.
Baishaoyao Tang
Baishao (White Peony Root, stir-fried with wine, 1 liang) Zexie (Alisma Rhizome, 5 qian) Gancao (Licorice Root, raw, 1.2 qian) Rougui (Cinnamon Bark, select thin pieces, scrape off rough bark, 1 qian)
Grind into coarse powder. Each time use 2 qian, add one cup of water, decoct until reduced to three-quarters, and take frequently on an empty stomach. If there is pain below the umbilicus, add Gouteng (Uncaria Ramulus cum Uncis, 1 qian), one slice of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), and 0.05 qian of Yan (Salt).
[Formula Song] Baishaoyao Tang contains Zexie and Gancao, plus Rougui ground together into coarse powder; specifically treats umbilical swelling and frightful crying, decoct and take two qian on an empty stomach.
Waixiaosan
Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome) Muli (Oyster Shell) (each 5 qian) Puxiao (Mirabilite, 2 qian)
Grind into fine powder. Take dozens of live river snails, wash them clean, then keep them in half a basin of clear water overnight. Take the water exuded by the snails the next day to mix with the medicine powder and apply to the affected area. Return the snails to the water without harming them for the remedy to be effective.
[Formula Song] Waixiaosan applied for sudden umbilical protrusion, Dahuang, Muli, and Puxiao; soak live river snails in clear water, take the water overnight to mix the medicine.
