[Song of the Divine Lamp Illumination Method]
For mild cases of carbuncles and sores around the seventh day after onset, the Divine Lamp Illumination Method is most appropriate. If pus has not yet formed, it can resolve spontaneously; if pus has already formed, it promotes ulceration. It takes effect immediately and causes necrotic tissue to slough off, truly remarkable. A torch soaked in oil (Divine Lamp) is used to illuminate the area surrounding the lesion. Initially, three lamps are used, gradually increasing the number. After illumination, medicaments should be applied and patched onto the affected area. If pus is present, it should be washed with a decoction without delay.
[Note] For mild cases of carbuncles and sores within seven days before or after onset, the Divine Lamp Illumination Method is most suitable. It enables lesions that have not yet suppurrated to resolve spontaneously, and those that have suppurrated to ulcerate spontaneously. Lesions that do not rise will subsequently rise, and those that do not putrefy will subsequently putrefy, demonstrating remarkable efficacy. The hemp seed oil-soaked wicks for the Divine Lamp are lit by fire, held approximately half an inch away from the sore, and slowly illuminated in a circular motion from the outside inward, with the flame pointing upward. The medicinal vapor enters the interior, and toxic pathogens disperse with the heat, preventing internal invasion of the Zang-Fu organs. Start with three lamps, gradually increasing to four or five. Continue illumination as the lesion's severity subsides. Immediately after illumination, apply medicaments, covering the base of the lesion, extending two or three fen larger than the erythema. Apply Wanying Gao (Universal Plaster) to the wound opening. If dry or purulent, rinse with Zhu Ti Tang (Pig Trotter Decoction). If already ulcerated with profuse discharge, this illumination method is unnecessary.
Formula for Divine Lamp Illumination Method
Cinnabar (Zhusha), Realgar (Xionghuang), Dragon's Blood (Xuexie), Myrrh (Moyao) (each 2 qian), Musk (Shexiang) (4 fen).
Grind all into a fine powder. Use 3 fen per application. Wrap the powder in red cotton paper, roll into a stick seven cun long, soak thoroughly in sesame oil, and set aside for use.
[Prescription Song] The Divine Lamp Illumination Method acts quickly and urgently; Musk, Myrrh, Realgar, Cinnabar, and Dragon's Blood are suitable. Grind into powder, wrap in paper, moisten with sesame oil, ignite to fumigate the sore, driving away fire-toxins.
[Song of Mulberry Wood Fire Roasting Method]
When carbuncles and sores first appear with swelling and pain, feeling heavy as if bearing a stone, hard without suppuration, the Mulberry Wood Fire Roasting Method can detoxify, relieve pain, reduce swelling, and eliminate edema with remarkable efficacy. Use new mulberry tree roots split into strips, or branches about nine cun long, split to the thickness of a finger. Ignite one end, blow out the open flame, and roast the affected area with the residual heat. Replace when the fire burns out; using three or four sticks yields better results. Roast two to three times daily until swelling subsides, ulceration occurs, necrotic tissue sloughs off, and new flesh grows.
[Note] For initial carbuncles and sores presenting with swelling, pain, heaviness like bearing a stone, hardness, and lack of suppuration, roasting with mulberry wood can detoxify, relieve pain, reduce swelling, dissipate stasis, and promote internal resolution once toxic fluids exit. If ulcerated but not putrefying, with no new flesh growth and persistent pain, this method aids Yang Qi, dissipates stasis and toxins, generates muscle tissue, and moves deep pathology to superficial levels, demonstrating remarkable efficacy. The method uses new mulberry root split into strips, or mulberry branches nine cun long, split to finger thickness. Ignite one end and blow out the flame. Roast the affected area with the heat for a period, replacing when exhausted. Use three or four sticks per session, twice or thrice daily, stopping when warmth is felt, swelling subsides, ulceration occurs, and tissue putrefies. This is an ancient method. However, mulberry wood fire is intense and should be used before ulceration to generate Yang Qi and accelerate suppuration and putrefaction. After ulceration, if the wound is cold, weather is cold, or flesh growth is delayed, roasting is also necessary to keep the tissue warm. Burn mulberry wood into red charcoal, place in a perforated ladle, suspend above the lesion, and roast from the periphery toward the center, adjusting height based on sensation of warmth. Change dressings after each daily roasting session. Since flesh grows when warm, post-ulceration roasting is indispensable in surgical dermatology.
