**Ear Root Toxicity (Er Gen Du)** initially presents as a phlegm-nodule shape, swelling like a crouching rat, with redness and pain. The etiology involves Wind-Fire of the San Jiao (Triple Burner) and Qi-Stagnation/Fire of the Gallbladder channel rushing upward. It swells violently and ulcerates rapidly; it is not a carbuncle or deep abscess.
[Note] This condition arises behind the ear. Initially, it resembles a phlegm nodule, gradually increasing in swelling to resemble a crouching rat, becoming red and painful. It is formed by the condensation of Wind-Fire from the San Jiao (Triple Burner: a functional system regulating water metabolism and qi movement) and the upward rush of Anger-Qi from the Gallbladder channel. However, this condition swells abruptly and ulcerates quickly, with a shallow root and ease of healing, unlike carbuncles or deep abscesses which are severe and toxic. If chills and fever alternate at the onset, Jing Fang Bai Du San (Schizonepeta and Saposhnikovia Decoction for Overcoming Toxins) should be taken to induce sweating; if fever and pain are severe, Xian Fang Huo Ming Yin (Immortal Formula for Saving Lives) should be used to dissipate the swelling; when pus forms, Tou Nong San (Pus-Permeating Powder) should be taken; for deficiency patterns, Tuo Li Tou Nong Tang (Supporting Interior and Permeating Pus Decoction) is indicated. After ulceration, Hong Ling Yao (Red Spirit Medicine) should be sprinkled externally, followed by application of Tai Yi Gao (Great One Plaster). Once the pus is exhausted, switch to applying Sheng Ji Yu Hong Gao (Muscle-Generating Jade Red Ointment) to generate flesh and close the wound. For patients with deficiency, where pus is clear and thin or wound closure is delayed, Xiang Bei Yang Rong Tang (Aucklandia and Angelica Nourishing Nutrient Decoction) should be taken to tonify, leading to natural healing.

**Yuzhen Carbuncle (Yu Zhen Ju)** belongs to the Du Meridian (Governing Vessel). The syndrome results from accumulated heat and wind pathogenic factors invading. The location is slightly above the Naohu acupoint on the occipital bone. High swelling indicates a favorable prognosis, while purple depression indicates an ominous one.
[Note] This condition is caused by accumulated heat in the Du Meridian (Governing Vessel: the sea of yang meridians) condensing with external wind pathogens. It occurs at the tip of the Yuzhen bone, slightly above the Naohu acupoint. Initially, it is millet-sized, accompanied by numbness and itching, chills and fever, thirst, and constipation. It gradually becomes hard, large ones resembling eggplants, small ones resembling goose eggs, appearing red, vibrant, and swollen. Ulceration discharging thick pus is auspicious and favorable; purple-dark depression with bleeding fluid upon ulceration is ominous and dangerous. Initially, Shen Shou Wei Sheng Tang (Divine Grant Health Preservation Decoction) should be taken to dissipate and resolve; for deficiency patterns, Tuo Li Xiao Du San (Supporting Interior and Eliminating Toxin Powder) is suitable, with Chong He Gao (Harmony Plaster) applied externally. All other internal and external treatment methods follow the protocols in the Carbuncle, Swelling, and Ulcer sections.
