Shizhong (Dampness Edema) is a disease caused by injury to the Spleen Qi. It may result from sudden invasion of wind-cold after eating, or from stagnation due to mistakenly consuming raw and cold foods when hungry or thirsty. Cold accumulates in the middle jiao, and food fails to digest. Symptoms include a sensation of fullness and tightness in the chest and diaphragm, difficult urination, edema of the face and eyes, which gradually spreads to the entire body. This is due to the injury of Earth (Spleen) failing to transform and transport. The appropriate treatment is Erjiao San to unblock the Spleen Earth and warm-nourish the Spleen Yuan (Source). Consequently, urination will naturally become smooth, and edema will subside. This formula boasts miraculous efficacy with a hundred percent success rate.
Erjiao San
Erjiao San consists of calcined Glauber's Salt (Pining) and three-year-old rice stir-fried until charred.
Take with dampness-edema sugar water; like dragons moving water, the pathogen naturally dissipates.
It treats cases where raw/cold foods or anger injure the Spleen and Stomach, leading to chest/diaphragm fullness, difficult urination, and edema of the face and four limbs, when other medicines are ineffective.
Use three-year-old yellow millet stir-fried until dark yellow, ground into powder. Extract pure Mirabilite (Mangxiao) 3 qian, dissolve it in a pot, mix with the millet powder, stir-fry until dry, and grind into an extremely fine powder. Each dose is one level cup, mixed well and ground finer again. For adults with robust constitutions, take 3 qian per dose; for children around ten years old, take 1.2 qian per dose. Mix with 3 teaspoons of brown sugar and half a tea cup of boiling water, taken on an empty stomach. By noon, there will be one bowel movement; by evening, another. The disease will first subside starting from the eyelids. For those with long-standing deficiency of Yuan Qi, alternate with Jiawei Weiling Tang. For severe cases, five doses are sufficient for cure.
Jiawei Weiling Tang
Jiawei Weiling Tang consists of Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Poria (Fuling), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Crataegi Fructus (Shanzha), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao), Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia), Agastache Herba (Huoxiang), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie), Polyporus (Zhuling), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), and Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu); its efficacy is like divine spirit.
It is taken by patients suffering from injury to the Spleen and Stomach, chest/diaphragm fullness, distension of both hypochondria, difficult urination, and edema of the face and four limbs.
Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Poria (Fuling), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao) (each 1 qian); Agastache Herba (Huoxiang), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo), Crataegi Fructus (Shanzha), Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie), Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia) (each 0.5 qian); Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Polyporus (Zhuling) (each 0.3 qian); Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu) (add 1 qian for women).
