When a person is free from disease, failure to properly regulate the body may lead to various illnesses. How much more so after illness has set in; if no care is taken to nurture and regulate the condition, how can recovery be expected? There are principles for regulation and treatment: at the onset of the disease, one must first assess whether the patient's Yuan Qi (Original Qi) is deficient or excess, then determine whether the sore/ulcer is Yin or Yang, and whether it is dangerous or favorable. Only then should medication be administered. If attack (expelling pathogenic factors) is indicated, attack; if tonification is indicated, tonify. Do not procrastinate or delay, lest unexpected complications arise. Furthermore, the patient must calm the mind and spirit, discard distracting thoughts, and avoid panic, thereby preserving the Shen (Spirit) and Qi from disorder. One must also adapt to seasonal changes. For instance, in summer heat, one should avoid drafts when sitting or lying down, and avoid placing cold water near the bed or under it. In winter cold, one must guard against chill in daily life, maintaining warmth. Without heating with firewood, it is difficult to inspect open sores; exposure to cold often leads to multiple complications. Before the ulcer suppurates and breaks, toxic pathogens act internally. If the patient experiences dry mouth and thirst, cool substances should be given sparingly to moisten accumulated heat. After the pus breaks and drains, all raw, cold, and hard foods are strictly prohibited. Otherwise, the Spleen and Stomach will be damaged, pus formation will be hindered, leading to soft, sunken ulcers that are difficult to heal. Diet should consist of aromatic, dry, sweet, and mild foods. Porridge and rice should follow the patient's preferences, but overeating must be avoided. Meals should be small in quantity, hot in temperature, and thick in consistency, ensuring no stagnation and easy digestion. Following the rupture of large ulcers, both Qi and Blood are deficient, and the Spleen and Stomach are weak. It is necessary to prepare Baxian Gao (Eight Immortals Cake), consuming several pieces morning and evening to replenish True Yuan (True Original Qi) and strengthen the root. Additionally, Shenzhu Gao (Ginseng and Atractylodes Paste) should be decocted. If the patient suffers from dual deficiency of the Spleen and Stomach, reduced appetite, chest fullness, and loss of taste, take three spoons of Baizhu Gao (Atractylodes Macrocephala Paste) and two spoons of Renshen Gao (Ginseng Paste), dissolved in clear rice soup on an empty stomach. Those who prefer alcohol may dissolve them in wine. If there is mental fatigue, drowsiness, spontaneous sweating, lassitude, and reluctance to move, take three spoons of Renshen Gao (Ginseng Paste) and two spoons of Baizhu Gao (Atractylodes Macrocephala Paste), also dissolved in wine. If the skin is rough and dry, the complexion is dull and lusterless, or if there is constipation due to blood deficiency, or dry skin and brittle hair, mix two spoons each of Dihuang Gao (Rehmannia Paste) and take together, or consume with Yangchun Wine for better effect. These two preparations strengthen the spirit, rapidly generate Qi and Blood, open the appetite, assist the Spleen, moisten the skin, and nourish the bones. Their efficacy is significant; they are indispensable for large ulcers and far surpass ordinary herbs. Patients should trust and use them to prevent further changes. Deficient patients often experience recurrent fluctuations, resulting in varying degrees of ease or difficulty in recovery. This ultimately depends on adhering to or neglecting these regulatory principles.
