Carbuncles and sores (ulcerative swellings) complicated by spasms constitute a critical, deteriorating condition. The presentation resembles tetanus, characterized by trismus (lockjaw), rigidity of the four limbs, opisthotonos (backward arching of the back), and convulsions of the limbs. If sweating is present, it is termed "Rou Jing" (Soft Spasm); treat with *Gualou Guizhi Tang* (Trichosanthes Root and Cinnamon Twig Decoction). If there is coldness in the hands and feet, add *Guizhi* (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and *Fuzi* (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata). Misdiagnosing this as wind-stroke will rapidly accelerate the danger to life.
If the ulcer has not healed after rupture, and poison from soapberry juice or any other filthy toxic water enters the wound, it causes swelling and pain at the affected site. First, wash clean with *Huoxiang Tang* (Agastache Decoction). Then, apply an equal proportion of finely powdered *Baifan* (Alum) and *Taodan* (Red Lead Oxide, stir-fried) to the area, or chew *Wumei* (Mume Fruit) until soft and apply it topically. If the patient experiences bone-penetrating pain, restlessness, and fainting, suspecting internal attack by toxin, use 5 qian of *Machixian* (Portulacae Herba), decocted in wine for oral administration; induce drunkenness to achieve efficacy.
In summer, various ulcers that have ruptured and were neglected without cleaning may accumulate pus and filth, attracting flies to gather and lay eggs, producing maggots. Apply powder made from *Zaofan* (Chalcanthite) processed by water levigation to the lesion; the maggots will immediately dissolve into liquid. The treatment method is the same.
The vertex (top of the head, commonly known as Tianlinggai): The Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian and the Du Mai (Governor Vessel) intersect at the vertex; the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian intersects at the vertex; the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian intersects at the vertex.
The brain: The marrow within the skull. The Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian is associated with the sea of marrow; the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian connects to the brain corners (the angular regions on both sides of the forehead); the Foot-Shaoyang meridians ascend directly to the temporal angles.
The frontal cranium (below the hairline, above the two eyebrows, also called Sang): The Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian reaches the frontal cranium; the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian ascends to the left corner of the forehead; the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian knots at the upper corner of the forehead; the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian descends to the forehead.
Hair: Governed by the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian.
Baihui Ju (Abscess at Baihui), also named Yuding Fa, arises at the Baihui point (GV20) in the exact center of the vertex. Foding Ju arises anterior to the fontanelle. Yong Ju, also named Naofa Ju, arises above the eyes. Yuzhen Ju arises 4.5 cun above the posterior aspect of the head on the Yuzhen bone, near the Naohu point (GV16). Naohou Fa arises below the Yuzhen bone at the Fengfu point (GV16). Tou Nao Ju arises anterior to the Baihui point, at the junction of the fontanelle. Qin Nao Ju arises five shi points anterior-lower to the side of the Tou Nao Ju. Nao Shuo arises at the Fengfu point (GV16) on the posterior neck, in the center between the two major tendons. Fa Ju arises within the hair at the fontanelle; when occurring in infants, it is named Shan Gong Tou. All are treated according to the standard protocols for carbuncles and sores.
