Exogenous diseases (diseases caused by external pathogenic factors) and internal injury deficiency syndromes present with similar symptoms, yet their treatment methods are fundamentally different. Deficiency syndrome (Xu Sun) involves a dual deficiency of Yin and Yang; whereas Lao syndrome (a deficiency condition caused by overexertion) is characterized by Yin deficiency with hyperactive Yang. Therefore, for deficiency syndrome, one may use... [text missing or erroneous].
The method to distinguish these two conditions: pulse diagnosis is not necessary; simply observe the patient's clothing. If the patient wears thin clothes (indicating cold intolerance), it is Lao syndrome. [Text repetition: "person wearing thin clothes"].
Whenever a person falls into unconsciousness after a fall, or falls out of bed while lying down, this is all due to Qi deficiency allowing Phlegm-evil to invade. The appropriate prescription is: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber, 3 qian), Nan Xing (Arisaematis Rhizoma, 3 qian), Sheng Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata, raw, 1 piece). Decoct in water and administer orally. This formula is named "San Sheng Yin" (Three Life Decoction); administer urgently.
This condition may also arise from Kidney deficiency. The Kidney stores Essence and governs reproduction in the Lower Jiao; the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) and Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) are connected to the Kidney. Due to Kidney deficiency, the Kidney collaterals become severed from the interior of the Bao Gong (Uterus/Womb), failing to connect upwards. If they do not connect upwards, aphonia (Yin) occurs; if the Kidney meridian does not ascend along the throat and surround the root of the tongue, speech becomes impossible. If the two collaterals fail to connect downwards, fei jue (limb flaccidity and厥逆) ensues. The appropriate prescription is "Di Huang Yin Zi": Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 1 liang), Ba Ji Tian (Morindae Officinalis Radix, 1 liang), Shan Yu Rou (Corni Fructus, 1 liang), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata, 5 qian), Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis, 6 qian), Rou Cong Rong (Cistanches Herba, 1 liang)... [text missing or erroneous "Bo"].
[Regarding facial paralysis]: People often treat using Liver (Wood) and Lung (Metal) methods, which is correct, but they fail to realize that regulating Spleen/Stomach Earth (Wei Tu) is even more critical. One should treat the Stomach Earth, distinguishing between Jing (Meridians) and Mai (Vessels). The *Jing* (Classic) states: "When the Foot-Yangming Meridian is affected, urgency causes deviation of the mouth and eyes, and urgency prevents vision." This indicates deviation of the Stomach Earth meridian. It also states: "The Foot-Yangming Vessel surrounds the lips and cheeks, causing deviation of the mouth and slanting of the lips." This indicates deviation of the Stomach Earth vessel.
For both conditions, the following herbs should be used: Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Su Mu (Sappan Lignum), Hong Hua (Carthami Flos). Decoct in half water and half wine. Administer slightly warm. [Text repetition: "Decoct in half water and half wine"].
If there are exogenous symptoms at the onset, add three stalks of Cong Bai (Scallion White) to decoct together; induce slight sweating for self-healing.
Another treatment formula:
[Regarding facial paralysis again]: When the Heart-Mind is extremely deficient and unable to coordinate movement between the mouth and ears, mild cases result in facial deviation, while severe cases result in aphasia. The appropriate prescription is: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 3 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 5 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 3 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber, 2 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 2 qian), Shi Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, 1 qian)... [text missing].
Decoct this formula in water; two doses will result in recovery.
