Whenever the "Fa Bei" (Back Eruption) disease first begins, symptoms may resemble a boil, or involve severe pain, or mild pain. Initially, the swelling is as small as a hemp seed; this is a minor sign of Fa Bei and should be observed promptly. If there are any slight variations in symptoms, one must be greatly alarmed and treat it urgently, while observing dietary restrictions and quickly taking various medications to drain out heat toxins. If in a remote area without medical supplies, the aforementioned methods should be employed.
To treat Fa Bei carbuncles and ulcers, where heat toxins fiercely attack muscles, causing unbearable redness, swelling, and pain, whether suppurating or already suppurated, or when wind-heat toxins linger in joints:
Han Shui Shi (Calcitum, 2 liang), Yang Tao Gen (Root of Prunus davidiana, 1 liang, chopped), Xiao Shi (Niter, 1 liang), Chuan Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 1 liang), Bai Lian (Rhizoma Akebiae, 3 fen), Mu Xiang (Radix Aucklandiae, 3 fen), Fu Zi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, 3 fen), Chi Xiao Dou (Adzuki Bean, 1 liang).
Pulverize the above herbs finely and sift through a fine sieve. When using, mix with 1 he of raw honey and 1 he of Rehmannia juice, simmer into a thick paste, spread on raw silk, and apply to the affected area. Replace when dry, until the swelling subsides.
Fa Bei originates from within and erupts outward, hence the name. The pathology involves heat toxins accumulating in the middle diaphragm, obstructing the flow of qi up and down, thus erupting through the deficient areas of the back. Three to five months prior to onset, urticaria and stifling sensations occur, gradually accumulating in the skin and muscles to form swelling, which eventually breaks through the skin. Hence called Fa Bei. Use the following:
Bai Mai Fan Shi (Wheat Meal Stone, yellowish-white like wheat meal, best if used as a whetstone previously; calcine with charcoal until red, quench in vinegar, repeat ten times), Lu Jiao (Deer Antler, 2 cun, cut; use parts with brain bone, calcine until smoke ceases), Bai Lian powder.
Mix equal parts of Mai Fan Shi and Bai Lian powder, using double the amount of Deer Antler ash. Pulverize each separately and sift finely. Decoct with three ping measures of wood vinegar in a pot, preparing as for a plaster. Apply... [text incomplete].
For Fa Bei caused by mineral drug toxicity, with red-black sores, apply the Willow Wood Ear Mushroom Cake:
Lao Liu Shu Shang Mu Er (Wood Ear Mushroom on old willow tree, 2 liang), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 1 liang, remove stamens), Long Kui Gen (Root of Solanum nigrum, one handful, washed clean and chopped), Ru Xiang (Olibanum, 1 liang), Ren Fen (Human Feces, 0.5 liang), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed, 1 liang, soaked in hot water, skin and tip removed).
Mix and pound 300-500 times, shape into cakes thicker than 5 qian, applying according to sore size. Secure with single-layer silk cloth. If the patient feels itching and cold sensation reaching the heart, do not scratch. Change every distance equivalent to walking 30 li. If unbearable itching occurs, surrounding skin will wrinkle, leading to recovery.
For Fa Bei, temporal abscesses, breast abscesses, and various toxic swellings, apply the Coptis Cake:
Huang Lian (1 liang, remove stamens), She Chuang Zi (Cnidii Fruit, 1 liang), Ru Xiang (1 liang), Xing Ren (0.5 liang), Man Cao Gen (Root of Rubia cordifolia, one handful), Yan (Salt, 1 fen), Da Fen Hui (Ash of Human Excrement, 0.5 liang), Liu Shu Shang Mu Er (1 liang).
Pulverize and sift finely. Mix with butter to form cakes of 5 qian thickness. Apply to the lesion, securing tightly with coarse cloth. Change 3-4 times daily, including at night. Before each change, wash with Licorice decoction. This promotes suppuration if not yet formed, or manages existing pus.
For early-stage Fa Bei, sized like a hemp seed, gradually hardening and painful, use Da Huang San:
Chuan Da Huang, Mu Xiang, Xuan Shen, Huang Qin, Chi Shao Yao, Bai Lian, Zi Ge, Chi Xiao Dou (each 1 liang).
Pulverize and sift finely. Mix with egg white to a paste consistency. Spread on silk and apply. Replace when dry, until resolved.
For Fa Bei toxic swelling with redness and pain, use Xiong Huang San:
Xiong Huang (Realgar, 1 liang, finely ground), Huang Lian (1 liang, remove stamens), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex, 0.5 liang, chopped), Chi Xiao Dou (3 fen), Chuan Po Xiao (Mirabilite, 1 liang), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 0.5 liang), Bai Ji (Bletillae Rhizoma, 3 fen).
Pulverize and sift finely. Mix with pig bile to a paste. Apply to swelling 3-4 times daily.
For Fa Bei sores, to extract toxins, use Ba Du San:
Yang Qi Shi (Crocoitum, 1 liang), Han Shui Shi (Calcitum, 1 liang), Fan Shi (Alumen, 1 liang), Bai Shi Zhi (Halloysitum Rubrum, 1 liang), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 1 liang), Mai Fan Shi (1 liang).
Pulverize and sift, then grind to flour-like fineness. Mix with fresh well water and apply to sores.
For Fa Bei and various toxic swellings, apply Gua Lou Gen San:
Gua Lou Gen (Trichosanthis Radix, 3 liang), Yu Bai Pi (Celtis Cortex, 3 liang, chopped), Hu Yan Chao Tu (Soil from swallow nests, 5 liang), Fen Rang Tu (Soil from mole hills, 3 liang).
Pulverize and sift finely. Mix with banana root juice to form a thin paste. Apply to swelling; reapply when dry. If ulcerated with a head, apply around the perimeter.
For Fa Bei sores with heat and pain, use Di Sheng Xiong Dan Wan:
Xiong Dan (Bear Bile, 1 fen), She Xiang (Musk, 1 fen).
Grind together and form pills the size of millet seeds. Clean the sore with warm water, insert one pill into the opening, sprinkle Jie Du Sheng Ji San on top, cover with vinegar-paste on old silk. Immediate relief even if pressing causes pain.
Jie Du Sheng Ji San Formula:
Duan Shi (Calcined Iron Ore, 1 fen, preferably from old ships, calcined red), Huang Dan (Minium, 1 liang, fried until purple), Long Gu (Fossilized Bones, 1 fen), She Xiang (1 fen), Shen Zi (Mulberry Fruit, 1 fen), Mi Tuo Seng (Litharge, 1 fen).
Pulverize and sift finely. Apply as needed.
For Fa Bei, use Mo Dao Shi to reduce swelling:
Mo Dao Chi Shi (Whetstone Red Stone, 1 piece, 3 cun long, 1 cun thick), Bai Lian (2 liang), Chuan Da Huang (1 or 2 liang), Cu (Vinegar, 1 sheng), Lu Jiao (Deer Antler, quantity implied).
Heat the stone until red, quench in vinegar, repeat until vinegar reduces by half. Combine all herbs, pulverize and sift. Mix with vinegar to a paste, apply on soft cloth. Replace when dry.
For all swellings and Fa Bei/breast abscesses, take Duan Shi San:
Feng Hua Duan Shi (Weathered Calcined Iron Ore, 1 he), Xiao Mai Mian (Wheat Flour, 2 or 3 he), Zao Jia Hui (Ash of Soap Pod, 1 he), Bai Lian (1 he).
