When a child is four or five years old and cannot speak, it is because the five Zang organs of humans correspond to five vocalizations, and the voice of the Heart manifests as speech. If the mother experiences sudden fright or terror during pregnancy, this condition may arise.
For treating children with insufficient Heart Qi and weakness at the root of the tongue, leading to delayed speech, use Shaoyao San (Peony Powder):
Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra, 1 liang) Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae, 3 fen, sliced) Xijiao Xie (Horn Rhinocerotis, 0.5 liang) Binglang (Arecae Semen, 0.5 liang) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 0.5 liang, honey-fried until slightly red and sliced)
Crush the above ingredients into a coarse powder. Take 1 qian per dose, decoct in one small cup of water until reduced to 0.5 cup, remove the dregs, and administer divided doses according to the child's age and size, without regard to specific timing.
For children who, after recovering from various illnesses, are six or seven years old and still cannot speak, use Jitou Wan (Rooster Head Pill):
Xiongjitou (Caput Galli Viridis, 1 piece, burnt to ash) Mingchan (Periostracum Cicadae, 3 pieces, lightly stir-fried) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 0.5 liang, honey-fried until slightly red and sliced) Chuan Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 1 liang, sliced and lightly stir-fried) Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis, heart removed) Mutong (Caulis Akebiae, sliced)
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of mung beans. Administer 5 pills per dose with millet gruel broth, adjusting the dosage according to the child's size, without strict timing restrictions.
For children aged five or six who do not speak, it is due to insufficient Heart Qi and weakness at the root of the tongue, resulting in immobility. This is also referred to as Wind-Cold pathogenic factors injuring the Shaoyin meridian, causing tongue stiffness.
Shichangpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii, 0.5 liang) Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 0.5 liang, radix removed) Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis, 0.5 liang, fibers removed) Danshen (Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae, 3 fen) Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis, 1 liang, heart removed and dried) Tianzhuhuang (Spatholobi Caulis, a small amount)
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of mung beans. Administer 5 pills per dose dissolved in warm water, according to the child's size, without strict timing restrictions.
Another prescription:
Grind Chi Xiaodou (Vigna umbellata seeds) into a fine powder, mix with wine, and apply to the child's tongue; the child will then speak, with miraculous efficacy.
Delayed walking in children is caused by insufficiency of Liver and Kidney Qi, leading to weak bone Qi and powerless sinews and vessels.
