Gan disease (Wasting-Thirst Syndrome) arises from excessive consumption of sweet flavors, which agitates the parasites in the stomach, leading to the erosion of the Zang-Fu organs. This is the etiology of Gan disease. All foods with the five flavors affect the Stomach.
(The original text contains lacunae here; based on context, it likely describes symptoms such as lethargy and stiffness of the waist and spine. The fifth type is Black Gan, which erodes the Five Zang organs, often resulting in the passage of black blood, leading to death within a few days.)
Among the five types of Gan, White Gan is the mildest, followed by Red Gan, then Yellow Gan, while Black Gan is the most severe. These conditions all ascend from the intestines to erode the throat, causing sores on the gums, and descend to cause bleeding from the anus. Symptoms include vomiting and regurgitation, heat in the palms and soles, lower back pain, and somnolence. The condition is milder in autumn and winter but exacerbates in spring and summer.
Furthermore, if the complexion is green, cheeks are red, eyes are dry, the abdomen is distended with masses, and the patient wastes away day by day, this indicates Gan disease eroding the Five Zang organs, where the patient remains unaware until death.
If Gan disease lingers, it transforms into Gan accumulation (or Gan exhaustion). The treatment for Gan accumulation involves sores like millet grains inside the upper lip, a feeling of stifling discomfort and dryness in the mouth, abdominal pain, withered and pale complexion, somnolence, heavy body, and parasitic erosion of the Zang organs causing suffering.
