When wind-toxic qi is abundant, it causes a blockage between yin and yang, leading to the obstruction of qi and blood vessels and the failure of body fluids to circulate. Fluid retention in the chest condenses into phlegm. The clinical manifestations are as follows:
For Hongjiao (a condition characterized by swelling and pain in the lower limbs), if the pathogenic factor attacks upward to the heart and chest, causing phlegm obstruction, headache, dizziness, irritability and pain in the back and shoulders, and loss of appetite, Banxia San (Pinellia Powder) should be administered.
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 1 liang, washed seven times with hot water to remove slipperiness), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 3 fen), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix, 3 fen, radix removed), Xiongqiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 0.5 liang), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 0.5 liang, radix removed), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 liang, honey-fried until slightly reddish, sliced).
The above herbs are coarsely ground and sieved into a powder. Each dose consists of 3 qian, decocted with one zhong of water and half a piece of fresh ginger until reduced to 0.6 zhong. Strain the residue. Take at any time.
For the onset of Hongjiao, with phlegm obstruction in the heart and diaphragm, headache accompanied by vomiting and regurgitation, and aversion to the smell of food, Xixin San (Asari Powder) should be administered.
