Hongjiao (a disease characterized by swelling and numbness of the lower limbs, often translated as beriberi or gout) presenting with swelling and fullness is caused by wind-dampness toxic qi clashing with the Kidney Meridian. The Kidney governs water metabolism. Now, being attacked by pathogenic factors, the meridians become obstructed and stagnant, failing to circulate and unblock fluid metabolism.
For treating Hongjiao with swelling and fullness, difficult urination, panting and urgency, and inability to eat, it is suitable to take Hanfangji San Decoction.
Hanfangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, 0.5 liang), Chifuling (Polyporus, 3 fen), Binglang (Arecae Semen, 1 liang), Sanggenbaipi (Mori Cortex, 3 fen, sliced), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis, 3 fen, sliced), Zhuling (Polyporus, 3 fen).
The above herbs are crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Each dose is 4 qian. Take one zhong zhan (approx. 200ml) of water, add 0.5 fen of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, fresh ginger), and two bundles of Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus, scallion white, approx. 14 cun long). Decoct until reduced to 6/10 of the original volume. Strain the dregs. Take warm at any time.
