Jaundice is caused by excessive consumption of alcohol and food, leading to extreme heat in the zang-fu organs. The mixture of water and grain accumulates in the spleen and stomach, and is further constrained by wind-dampness. This results in stagnation and obstruction, where heat qi becomes郁 (stagnant) and steams upward. Consequently, patients feel hungry immediately after eating; their body, face, eyes, nails, teeth, and urine all turn yellow; they desire to lie down quietly; or their blood vessels may appear red or blue. These symptoms are invariably accompanied by chills and fever, which characterize Dan disease (jaundice). If thirst develops, the condition is difficult to treat; if there is no thirst, it is easier to cure. When the disease originates in the Yin aspect (interior), vomiting will occur; when it originates in the Yang aspect (exterior), chills and trembling will precede the onset of fever.
For treating jaundice accompanied by mental restlessness, red urine, difficulty in defecation, and inability to sleep peacefully, use Yinchen San (Artemisia Capillaris Powder).
