The Heart is the root of spirit (Shen) and the foundation of will and intellect. It should ideally remain clear and empty, avoiding dullness or turbidity. Dullness leads to turbid Qi; turbid Qi leads to chaotic Shen. When Shen is chaotic, the blood vessels fail to receive nourishment, resulting in deficiency of both Qi and Blood, dispersion of spirit, constant worry, and lack of acuity in hearing and vision. Consequently, mental faculties become impaired, leading to forgetfulness.
