To treat rebellious Phlegm-Qi, stop coughing, dissipate stuffiness and fullness, resolve obstruction and congestion, relieve pain and stifling sensation from hard accumulations, promote appetite, and harmonize the Five Zang Organs.
Lagui (Cinnamon Twig/Bark, often referring to Rougui/Cinnamon Bark in this context) Ganshengjiang (Dried Ginger, each 2.5 qian) Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, soaked seven times in boiling water) Fuling (Poria, peeled, each 1 liang) Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) Chenpi (Tangerine Peel, pith removed) Zexie (Alisma Rhizome, each half liang).
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Mix with wheat paste to form pills the size of small beans. Take 20–30 pills per dose, washed down with Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) decoction. Take three times daily. If the disease is located above the Diaphragm, take after meals; if below, take before meals; if in the middle, take at any time. Another prescription uses Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) and Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), each half liang, made into water-habituated pills, which is also effective.
To treat hiccups, vomiting, and belching associated with Heat syndromes of Shanghan (Cold Damage).
See the formula in the "Shanghan" section (add Shidi [Persimmon Calyx] and decoct for administration.)
The acupuncture method involves locating the point one finger-breadth below the patient's nipple, directly vertical to it, in the depression between the ribs. Similar to how a woman bends her nipple, the level even with the base of the nipple is the acupoint. Moxibustion is applied here using moxa cones the size of small beans, three zhuang (cones). For males, use the left side; for females, the right side. Only one side is treated. When the heat reaches the muscle layer, the condition will heal. If it does not heal, it is considered incurable. The acupoint should be taken where the artery beats between the ribs below the nipple.
To treat hiccups resulting from deficiency-cold in the Stomach after vomiting, diarrhea, or illness. If the hiccups occur continuously for seven or eight sounds without the ability to inhale deeply (Qi failing to return), it is difficult to treat.
Dingxiang (Clove) Shidi (Persimmon Calyx) Renshen (Ginseng Root) Fuling (Poria) Chenpi (Tangerine Peel) Liangjiang (Alpinia Officinarum Rhizome, stir-fried) Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, each 1 liang) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 1.5 liang) Gancao (Licorice Root).
Grind into powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add one zhan of water, decoct, and drink while hot in one go. Alternatively, use this powder to mix with Suhexiang Wan (Styrax Pill), which is also excellent.
To treat chronic cases of coughing and belching, involving continuous coughing for forty to fifty sounds.
Take half he of natural juice extracted from Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger). Add one spoonful of honey. Decoct together until cooked. Take warm at any time. Three to four doses will yield immediate effect.
