To treat headache, pain in the eyebrow bones, and unbearable eye pain.
Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Curcuma Aromatica Rhizoma (Yujin), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao), Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie Sui), Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao) (each half liang above); Menthae Haplocalycis Folium (Bohe Ye), Frankincense (Ruxiang), Myrrh (Moyao) (each one qian above); Borneolum Syntheticum (Pian Nao) (half qian).
Grind the above into a fine powder. For each use, take an amount equivalent to "yi zi" (approx. 0.3-0.5g), insufflate it into the nose to induce sneezing.
To treat various types of headache that have not responded to numerous medications.
Moschus (Shexiang) (a small amount), Camelliae Sinensis Germinans (Chaye) (one liang), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin), Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie), Aconiti Radix Lateralis Preparata (Chuanwu - note: text says Sheng/Unprocessed, but standard is often processed; sticking to text: Unprocessed Aconite Root), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (each half liang).
Cut the herbs into pieces. Take three qian per dose, add one and a half zhan of water, decoct until reduced to eight-tenths. Remove the dregs and take warm at any time.
To treat all kinds of headaches. However, those accompanied by fever should not take this. For other conditions such as Phlegm Jue (Phlegm-induced syncope/collapse), Fluid Retention Jue, Kidney Qi Jue, Qi Jue, as well as lateral or frontal headaches where [this specific remedy is not suitable/applicable], administer them according to the method for Shengbingzi (Sage Cake). Frequent administration will naturally yield efficacy. For individuals with Qi deficiency and advanced age, continue administering Yangzhengdan (Nourish Righteousness Pill) and Heixidandan (Black Tin Elixir), interspersed with Zhongrufen (Halloysitum). For headaches of various etiologies, there is no more rapid and effective method than this. Although Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao) is commonly used for headaches due to its heavy-sinking nature and cold property, Zhongrufen (Halloysitum) is used here as a substitute; it is particularly effective for headaches caused by Kidney Jue. Some may doubt the use of refined Halloysitum; using soft stone [likely referring to a less refined form or alternative mineral] is also verified to be effective.
Aconiti Radix (Sheng Fuzi - Unprocessed), Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix (Sheng Wutou - Unprocessed), Pinelliae Tuber cum Ginger et Alumine (Tian Nan Xing), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Gan Jiang - note: text says Gan/J dried, but usually Gan Jiang is dried; text specifies Gan Jiang), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) (each one liang above); Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (three fen).
Cut the herbs into pieces. Take four qian per dose, add two zhan of water, seven slices of fresh ginger, and a small amount of tea buds. Decoct until reduced to six-tenths. Remove the dregs and take before meals.
If the Middle Jiao (Epigastrium) has been chronically cold, do not use tea buds.
If Qi stagnation is severe, use only Chuanxiong Rhizoma (one liang), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (half liang), and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (two fen), decocting as described above.
Another prescription for headache: Asari Radix et Rhizoma (two qian), Chuanxiong Rhizoma and Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Bai Zhi) halved, ground into a fine powder, and insufflated into the nose.
Another prescription: Dried Galangal Rhizoma (Gaoliangjiang), dried without exposure to fire, ground into a fine powder. Hold a small amount of water in the mouth and insufflate the powder into the nose. Repeat several times until cured. This is especially effective for chronic headaches.
Another prescription for Qi-deficiency headache: One raw Aconite root (Fuzi), unprocessed, skin and navel removed, sliced. Soak in one large zhan of fresh ginger juice overnight. Dry over a mild fire, then roast again, until the ginger juice is fully absorbed. Mix with equal parts of Galangal Rhizoma (Gaoliangjiang) into a powder. Take mixed with Borneol tea, named Bixiaosan (Must-Efficacy Powder).
Another prescription: Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Bai Zhi) four qian, Unprocessed Aconite Root (Sheng Wutou) one qian, ground into powder. Take an amount equivalent to "yi zi" per dose, mixed with clear tea liquor. For someone suffering from eye pain, first instruct them to hold water in their mouth, then insufflate this medicine into the nose; the effect is particularly remarkable.
