Regarding the syndrome of rectal prolapse, *Nan Jing* states: it arises from deficiency and excess. Prolapse outward indicates deficiency; retraction inward indicates excess. Is the prolapse of the anus not caused by deficiency without reason?
Generally, excess patterns manifest as warmth; warmth implies sufficient internal Qi and Qi accumulation. Deficiency patterns manifest as cold; cold implies depleted internal Qi unable to retain. Furthermore, the Large Intestine may contain pus or be thin, and it is exterior-interior related to the Lung. If the Lung harbors latent heat, constipation results; if the Lung is deficient, prolapse occurs. According to the theory of Three Causes (internal, external, and non-external), women suffering from this condition often do so due to excessive exertion during childbirth. Children suffer from this due to chronic diarrhea/dysentery, resulting from Cold-deficiency of the Large Intestine. The anus is the manifestation of the Large Intestine. When the Large Intestine is injured by Cold-diarrhea and strain is applied, Qi rushes downward, causing the anus to prolapse. Wash the area with a decoction of equal parts *Cyperi Rhizoma* (Xiangfu) and *Schizonepetae Herba* (Jingjie). Alternatively, grind *Agrimoniae Herba* (Wubeizi) into a fine powder, place it on paper, insert it into the anus, and gently massage it in. If the condition persists for a long time, men may develop *Changfeng* (intestinal wind) and hemorrhoidal fistulas, with the anal verge protruding and unable to retract, even extending several cun. Wash with a decoction of equal parts *Agrimoniae Herba* (Wubeizi) and *Natrii Sulfas* (Puxiao). Also, burn *Equiseti Herba* (Muzei) to ash (without letting the smoke completely dissipate), add a small amount of *Moschus* (Shexiang), and apply a small amount after defecation; this is effective. Chronic dysentery leading to Zang-Fu deficiency can also cause anal protrusion. Itching at the anal verge indicates intestinal parasites; in men, this is often due to excessive alcohol and sexual indulgence. The Large Intestine is the official of transmission and transformation; the Kidney is the official of strength and vigor. Generally, Kidney deficiency leads to leakage, and maternal Qi (Lung Qi) is deficient due to Lung weakness, leaving the Qi of the Large Intestine without mastery, thus causing spontaneous anal prolapse. The treatment method involves using formulas that tonify Yuan Qi and clear latent heat, combined with washing externally with the aforementioned herbs. Medical treatment will invariably result in recovery.
