The *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) states: When the Chi pulse is slippery, it indicates substantial Qi and Blood, yet the meridians are obstructed. If the Shaoyin pulse is weak and faint, the faintness signifies a deficiency of Blood. If the Shaoyin pulse is slippery and rapid, it indicates sores in the genital region. If the Cun-kou pulse is floating and weak, floating signifies Qi deficiency, while weakness signifies a lack of Blood. A pulse that arrives with a shape resembling a zither string, accompanied by lower abdominal pain, primarily indicates irregular menstruation and sores in the orifices; a Liver pulse that is deep primarily indicates irregular menstruation and pain in the waist and abdomen. If the Chi pulse appears intermittent or cut off, it indicates irregular menstruation. If the Cun and Guan pulses are harmonious as usual, but the Chi pulse is imperceptible, it indicates irregular menstruation, likely manifesting as lower abdominal pain radiating to the waist, with stagnant Qi attacking upward to the chest and diaphragm. Obstruction of the meridians causing cold hernia pain around the umbilicus, with a deep and tight pulse, is caused by Cold pathogen lodging in the Blood Chamber (Uterus), causing Blood to coagulate and fail to circulate. The accumulation of Blood is assaulted by Qi, and new Blood clashes with old Blood, resulting in pain. Leaking blood mixed with red and white discharge: if the pulse is slow, or deficient, small, and slippery, the prognosis is good (survival); if the pulse is urgent, rapid, large, tight, and rapid, the prognosis is poor (death). In cases of metrorrhagia and leukorrhea with bleeding, if the Cun-kou pulse is faint and slow, and the Chi pulse is faint and wiry, slowness indicates Cold; if located in the Upper Jiao, it causes vomiting. A faint and wiry Chi pulse primarily indicates lower abdominal pain radiating to the lumbar spine, which must be accompanied by bleeding. If the Cun-kou pulse is wiry and large, wiriness indicates reduction (deficiency), and largeness indicates hollow (Kou pulse); reduction indicates Cold, and Kou indicates Deficiency. The clashing of Cold and Deficiency results in a Ge pulse; in women, this leads to spontaneous abortion and leaking uterine bleeding. An urgent, large, and wiry Chi pulse indicates Wind pathogen invading the Shaoyin meridian, causing women to leak red discharge. In cases of red leakage, if several sheng of blood are lost during the day and the pulse is urgent and rapid, the prognosis is poor (death); if the pulse is slow, the prognosis is good (survival). Deficient pulses at both Cun and Chi positions inevitably lead to leaking blood; if the pulse is wiry, it is incurable. A floating and large Taiyang pulse on the left hand indicates a male fetus. A deep and fine Taiyin pulse on the right hand indicates a female fetus.
This formula treats deficiency and damage to the Chong and Ren vessels, characterized by irregular menstrual cycles, excessive flow that does not cease, delayed onset without flow, excessive blood loss from metrorrhagia, pregnancy complications due to injury, retention of stasis, acute pain in the lower abdomen, and heat sensation in the five centers (palms, soles, and chest). It addresses all these conditions.
