23. Zicao Yinzi (Lithospermum Decoction). Treats infants who initially feel uncomfortable, where differentiation of symptoms and signs reveals indications of eruptive diseases (such as smallpox or measles). If after three to four days the rash remains hidden under the skin without emerging, or if the eruption is delayed, this formula is also suitable for administration. This is because Zicao (Radix Arnebiae seu Lithospermi) can unblock orifices, facilitating the emergence of pustules; it promotes water passages and eliminates pathogenic factors in the heart and abdomen, thereby removing accumulated internal heat and ensuring the peace of the zang-fu organs.
Take two liang of Zicao, finely chopped, steep in one large cup of boiling water, cover tightly to prevent the loss of its aroma, and administer warm according to the child's age. Even if the rash has emerged, symptoms will be alleviated.
24. Fahui Yin (Hair Ash Drink). Treats variola (smallpox) and similar pustular eruptions.
Take human hair, burn it to ash while preserving its medicinal properties, and administer with water. Ancient formulas use disordered hair to treat carbuncles, bone abscesses, pediatric heat sores, phlegm-heat, and various blood disorders, with verified efficacy. Hair is considered a surplus of blood; treating blood-related sores follows the principle of "treating like with like."
25. Niubang Gancao San (Burdock and Licorice Powder). Treats the initial stage of measles and smallpox; administration results in sparser eruptions.
Niubangzi (Fructus Arctii, bran-fried), one liang; Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried), one qian.
Grind into fine powder. Take one or two qian per dose, mixed with Huisui (Coriandri Fructus) decoction. Administer at any time.
26. Touro Rou Jiang (Rabbit Meat Paste). Eliminates pediatric smallpox.
Use rabbit meat, preferably from the twelfth lunar month, made into paste and consumed. It helps eliminate smallpox. Additionally, wash the sores with decoction of rabbit fur from the twelfth month, or apply the fur topically for good effect. Rabbit brain treats frostbite. Rubbing rabbit bone with vinegar and applying it treats chronic scabies. Rabbit fur treats moxibustion burns. Rabbit scalp treats "rabbit transmission" (a contagious skin disease characterized by toxin accumulation in the skin, feeling like needle pricks, and affecting qi). According to *Yaoxing Lun*, rabbit meat is neutral and cold; making it into paste eliminates smallpox due to its blood-cooling property. However, excessive consumption may cause sallow complexion, impair sexual function, and obstruct blood vessels, again due to its blood-cooling and heat-dispersing nature.
27. Anban San (Stabilize Maculae Powder). Regulates eruptive diseases.
Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Chi Fuling (Poria Cocos with Red Core), Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), Huangqi (Radix Astragali), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis, fried), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii, bran-fried), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, fried). Equal parts.
Grind into fine powder. Take one qian per dose. Add a little Zicao and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) to seven-tenths of a cup of water, decoct until four-tenths remain, strain, and drink warm. Adjust dosage based on the child's size. This formula detoxifies, cools blood, generates flesh, relaxes the intestines, guides heat out via urination, and relieves chest fullness. It is suitable for patients with eruptive diseases presenting heat without chills.
28. Luobo Tang (Radish Decoction). Treats slow or difficult eruption of macules and rashes.
Decoct juice from flowering radishes and administer frequently. Zhang Shi stated: "When the qi of the eruption is even, it emerges quickly." Consulting materia medica, radish treats cough and asthma, directs qi downward, reduces distension, detoxifies, quenches thirst, and resolves facial toxins. These actions harmonize qi, detoxify, and resolve stagnation, allowing eruptions to emerge evenly and quickly. Flowering radishes symbolize the intent of emergence.
29. Hongzi Tang (Red Seed Decoction). Harmonizes eruptive diseases.
Honghua Zi (Semen Carthami), Zicaorong (Radix Arnebiae seu Lithospermi), each one liang; Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae, nodes removed), Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), each half liang.
Grind into fine powder. Take half a qian per dose, mixed with Bohe decoction and a drop of wine. Mahuang releases pathogenic factors from the exterior; Shengma resolves accumulated toxicity; Zicao lubricates orifices. Honghua Zi is used because materia medica states it treats epidemic eruptions that fail to emerge; swallowing several seeds induces eruption.
30. Kuaiban San (Rapid Maculae Powder). Regulates eruptive diseases.
Guanzhong (Rhizoma Cyrtomii), Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), each one liang; Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, fried), Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii, bran-fried), each half liang.
Grind into fine powder. Take one qian per dose. Add seven leaves of Zhuye (Phyllostachys Viridis Folium) to one cup of water, decoct until five-tenths remain, strain, and drink warm. Adjust based on size. Guanzhong treats internal heat toxins due to its slightly cold nature. It is suitable for patients with irritability, thirst, dry throat, rapid breathing, constipation, dark scanty urine, dry mouth, and red eyes, indicating interior heat. If interior heat is absent, this formula is inappropriate and may cause harm. Conversely, failing to use it when indicated is also dangerous. Caution is required.
31. Gancao San (Licorice Powder). Treats unerupted sores, or those accompanied by restlessness and thirst.
Use large Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), amount unspecified, honey-fried and ground into powder. Take one or two qian per dose. Decoct in one cup of water until six-tenths remain, strain, and drink warm at any time in small sips. Stop once heat-toxin is relieved. For delayed eruption, continue using Zicao Yinzi (see section on early eruption). Adults should needle the area between the wrist bones (Chize/Lakebi region), left for males, right for females, or apply one moxa cone to assist in releasing toxin. Not needed if already erupted.
32. Zicao Rusheng San (Zicao Like-Sage Powder). For urgent use at the onset of eruption. Infants breastfeeding should have both infant and mother take it; children over four or five years old take it alone.
Zicao (Radix Arnebiae seu Lithospermi), two liang; Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, white pith removed), one liang.
Grind into fine powder. Take one qian per dose. Add three cun of Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) to a small cup of water, decoct until five-tenths remain, strain, and drink warm. Adjust based on size. *Miaoxuan Fang* states: "Even qi leads to quick eruption." Zicao lubricates orifices and removes abdominal pathogens; Chenpi regulates qi; Congbai disperses and opens the couli (skin pores).
33. Huadu Tang (Detoxifying Decoction). Suitable for eruptive diseases whether erupted or not.
Zicao (Radix Arnebiae seu Lithospermi), Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried), each half liang.
Cut into sizes similar to hemp seeds. Decoct with two cups of water and fifty grains of Nuomi (Oryza Sativa Glutinosa Semen) until one cup remains. Strain, cool to warm, and divide into several doses. Liu Shi Fu noted: For impending smallpox/measles with high fever and anorexia, one dose resolves internal toxicity. If one or two spots have appeared, half the toxicity is resolved. If allowed to erupt fully, they may scab within a day; three doses lead to recovery. The prescription aligns with its name and indications. Eruptive diseases without complications generally heal, but treatment must consider individual constitution (deficiency/excess), seasonality, and specific etiologies (wind-cold, diet, fright). As Zhang Zhongjing stated regarding typhoid: if a pre-existing condition flares during typhoid, treat both simultaneously. *Heren Shu* states: if external pathogenic factors differ from typical typhoid patterns, adjust treatment accordingly; do not rigidly adhere to fixed protocols. This formula resolves excess-heat toxin. For patients with deficiency, floating heat, or latent cold, adjustment is necessary to achieve balance.
34. Tiaozhong San (Regulate Middle Jiao Powder).
Baifuling (Poria Cocos), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Zihewche (Placenta Humana), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, fried). Equal parts.
Grind into fine powder. Take two qian per dose. Add two slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and two dates to one cup of water, decoct until six-tenths remain, strain, and drink warm. Divide into two or three doses.
35. Zicao Mutong Tang (Zicao and Akebia Decoction). Treats pediatric eruptive diseases.
Mutong (Caulis Akebiae), Zicao (Radix Arnebiae seu Lithospermi), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Fuling (Poria Cocos), Nuomi (Oryza Sativa Glutinosa Semen), each one liang; Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried), half liang.
Prepare as coarse powder. Take four qian per dose. Decoct in one and a half cups of water until one cup remains. Strain, cool to warm, and divide into two or three doses. Pediatric sores are governed by heat; excessive heat causes eruption and dark/scanty urine due to heat accumulation. This formula drains Heart fire and dries Spleen earth. Clear Heart prevents other diseases; balanced Spleen ensures harmony of the five zang organs. Mutong guides Heart fire; Nuomi enters Spleen earth.
36. Rusheng Tang (Like-Sage Decoction). Treats pediatric eruptive diseases with toxin attacking the throat causing swelling and pain.
Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis, fried), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, fried), Niubangzi (Fructus Arctii), each one liang; Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis, heart removed), half liang.
Grind into fine powder. Take two qian per dose, infuse with boiling water, and sip slowly. Adding Zhuye (Phyllostachys Viridis Folium) for decoction is superior. Dong Ji's formula is identical, using Niubangzi (also known as Eshi/Akebia fruit, different names).
37. Chantui Gancao Tang (Cicada Slough and Licorice Decoction). Promotes eruption of pediatric macules.
Da Chantui (Periostracum Cicadae, feet removed), twenty-one pieces; Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), one and a half qian.
Decoct in half a bowl of water until one small cup remains. Administer gradually. Effective and verified.
38. Zicao Zhike Tang (Zicao and Aurantium Decoction). Treats slow eruption or inverted sores (toxin sinking).
Zicao (Radix Arnebiae seu Lithospermi), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, fried), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii, bran-fried). Equal parts.
Prepare as coarse powder. Take three qian per dose. Decoct in a small cup of water until half a cup remains. Strain and drink warm. Stagnation impedes Ying and Wei circulation, causing slow eruption or inversion. Zhike expands the Large Intestine; Mutong benefits the Small Intestine; Zicao lubricates orifices and treats abdominal pathogens, facilitating eruption. Suitable for constipation or dysuria.
39. Danggui San (Angelica Powder). Treats initial illness with惊狂 (fright/mania), fever, sweating, no aversion to cold/wind, and surging-rapid pulse. Purge if indicated. Use before eruption if these signs appear.
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), one liang; Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried), one qian.
Grind into fine powder. Take two qian per dose. Add ten grains of Douchi (Ferus Sojae Preparatus) to one medium cup of water, decoct until half a cup remains. Strain and administer based on size. Stop when purged. Consume licorice juice cold daily. Adjust dosage for children aged one to three.
40. Kaidu Dan (Rapid Toxin Pill). Treats pediatric eruptive diseases; ensures even and quick eruption. Blood and qi follow each other; internal heat causes erratic blood flow and uneven qi. Eruptions require smooth qi flow. This pill is suitable for all eruptive cases.
Qianniu (Semen Pharbitidis, black, lightly fried), Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae), each one fen; Roudoukou (Semen Myristicae), half liang; Qingpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride), one liang (half raw, half processed).
Grind into fine powder, mix with water to form pills the size of millet seeds. Take seven to ten pills per dose, washed down with strong Zicao and Congbai decoction before meals. Adjust based on size.
