In the late spring of the Wuxu year, while purchasing books in my study, I met Mr. Xu Chengxia from Donghai, and subsequently had the honor to pay respects to Governor E, the Salt Transport Commissioner, as well as meet Wang Daicun from Jingling and Mr. Liang Dipei from Qiantang. None of them looked down upon me due to my humble background or lack of erudition, yet I dared not let myself be discarded by these senior figures for adhering to vulgar customs. In early summer, Mr. Wu Banqian from Jiangxia brought a handwritten manuscript titled *Qifang Leibian* (Collection of Anomalous Formulas). Covering ailments from head to toe, affecting men, women, children, internal and external conditions, as well as diseases of livestock and insects, it was listed comprehensively and considered an excellent reference for travel. Upon seeing it, Governor E expressed his delight, saying, "Alas! In ancient times, one would either serve as a capable prime minister or become a skilled physician. However, is it easy to speak of being a skilled physician? How does this compare to medical formulas widely disseminated in the world, thereby saving people universally!" He decided to have the book printed and published for the benefit of all, suggesting that Mr. Wu should take the lead. Thus, the text was entrusted to woodblock carvers and engraved on pear and jujube wood. Within a month, the work was completed, with over a thousand copies printed for circulation. However, Governor E's term had ended, and he was ordered to return to the capital promptly. He summoned me and said, "The purpose of printing this book is solely to aid humanity. I am bringing the printing blocks to the capital; how can they be used to print and distribute the book there? This would be akin to keeping it secret without publishing. I shall entrust it to you. You should understand my intention in having this book printed and continue its propagation for a long time." I replied, "I respectfully accept your orders." Alas! Governor E, a native of Changbai, sought to aid people within our hometown through his benevolent heart. How could I dare not follow his spirit of benefiting others and share it with the world? Regarding the cold, hot, warm, and neutral properties of herbs, and the selection or rejection of historical formulas, as I am not a proficient physician, I dare not arbitrarily add, subtract, or revise them. I only hope that those who obtain this book will consult and apply it, which would be my greatest fortune.
