[Song] Zi Qi (edema during pregnancy) initially presents with swelling on the dorsum of the feet; if left untreated, it may worsen and spread. Quan Sheng Bai Zhu San (White Atractylodes Decoction for Complete Life) and Tian Xian Teng San (Akebia Vine Decoction) should be used to promote diuresis, strengthen the Spleen, and cure the disease.
[Discussion] After the third month of pregnancy, the dorsum of both feet gradually swells, making walking difficult and even causing panting and chest oppression. The appetite is poor, resembling symptoms of fluid retention diseases, with yellow fluid oozing from between the toes. This is called Zi Qi, which subsides only after delivery. These patients originally suffer from invasion of Wind-Cold-Dampness and Spleen Qi Deficiency. Although decoctions should not be administered arbitrarily, there is still concern about unpredictable complications at the time of labor. It is advisable to take Tian Xian Teng San to soothe stagnation.
Chen Liangfu stated: Bilateral foot edema during pregnancy is named Cui Jiao (Brittle Foot). It is caused by Spleen Decline failing to control Water, leading to a struggle between Water and Blood. Quan Sheng Bai Zhu San should be used to tonify the Spleen Earth. Qi Zhongfu stated: Zi Qi should not be treated as ordinary water disease, as doing so would damage Yuan Qi. Those with this condition will likely have easier deliveries because there is more Water and Blood in the Bao Zhong (uterus). For primigravida, the fetus will surely perish, and childbirth will be delayed with flaccidity. "Famous Doctors' Records" states: Emperor Shaozhu of Song and Xu Wenbo were incognito when they saw a pregnant woman whose feet were swollen and unable to walk. Shaozhu diagnosed via pulse-taking that it was a female fetus. Xu Wenbo diagnosed it as a male fetus located on the left side with black pigmentation. Shaozhu was angry and wanted to perform an abortion, but Xu Wenbo said compassionately, "Your servant requests to use acupuncture." After puncturing Sanyinjiao (SP6), the fetus was expelled immediately; it was indeed male-shaped and black. This indicates that foot edema is often a sign of carrying a male fetus.

[Song] Sudden fainting and unconsciousness, with intermittent recovery but frequent recurrences. This is due to Wind Pathogen invading the Liver Wood; Ling Yang Jiao San (Antelope Horn Decoction) is effective as if by magic.
[Discussion] "Chan Bao" states: Wind is the Qi of the four seasons and eight directions. One should observe the wind on solar term days; wind blowing from its native direction is called Xu Xie Zei Feng (Empty Evil and Robber Wind). When it encounters human deficiency, it invades and causes disease according to its location. The Shu points of the Zang-Fu organs are all located on the back; those with Zang-Fu deficiency find it difficult to treat infections. If the Tai Yang Meridian is injured and combined with Cold-Dampness, resulting in trismus and spinal rigidity, it is named Feng Jing (Wind Spasm). When occurring during pregnancy, characterized by fainting and loss of consciousness, followed by awakening after a moment and subsequent recurrence, it is named Zi Xian (Eclampsia), also known as Zi Mao. Prolonged cases develop spasms. Qian Jin Ling Yang Jiao San (Antelope Horn Decoction from Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) or Ge Gen Tang (Kudzu Root Decoction) with Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap) should be used.
