Some cases arise from the invasion of the Six Excesses (Wind, Cold, Summer-heat, Dampness, Dryness, Fire) and Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Pensiveness, Sorrow, Fear, Fright); some result from drunkenness, overeating, or sexual exhaustion; some are caused by rich and greasy foods; or by taking drying agents. These conditions lead to Spleen-Stomach deficiency and sinking of Yang Qi; or they result from Damp-Phlegm pouring downward and accumulating, hence termed "Leukorrhea" (Dai Xia). All such cases should be treated primarily by strengthening the Spleen and Stomach and raising Yang Qi, assisted by herbs addressing specific symptoms of the affected meridians. If the pathology belongs to the Liver meridian, the discharge is green; use Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) with Gardenia (Shan Zhi). If it is Damp-Heat congestion with red and scanty urination, use Long Dan Xie Gan Tang (Gentian Liver-Draining Decoction). If it belongs to the Heart meridian, the discharge is red; use Xiao Chai Hu Tang with Coptis (Huang Lian), Gardenia, and Angelica Sinensis (Dang Gui). If it belongs to the Lung meridian, the discharge is white; use Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with Gardenia. If it belongs to the Spleen meridian, the discharge is yellow; use Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) with Gardenia and Bupleurum (Chai Hu); if ineffective, switch to Gui Pi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction). If it belongs to the Kidney meridian, the discharge is black; use Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill). If both Qi and Blood are deficient, use Ba Zhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction). If Yang Qi is sinking, use Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang. If Damp-Phlegm pours downward, add Atractylodes Macrocephala (Cang Zhu) and Phellodendron (Huang Bo) to the aforementioned formulas. If Qi deficiency leads to Phlegm-Fluid pouring downward, use Si Qi Tang administered with Shen Qi Wan (Kidney-Energy Pill).
Clinical Cases:
A woman over sixty years old suffered from internal heat and dry mouth, dizziness upon exertion, expectoration, and leukorrhea. Previous treatment with phlegm-resolving and Qi-moving herbs exacerbated these symptoms, reduced appetite, caused occasional limb numbness. Strict adherence to wind-dispelling and phlegm-resolving treatments resulted in frequent limb numbness, alternating cold and hot sensations in hands and feet, and progressive emaciation. I stated: This syndrome belongs to Spleen-Qi deficiency failing to nourish the Lungs; wind-dispelling agents further damaged the meridians. The source of transformation must be nourished. Thus, I prescribed Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang with Poria (Fu Ling), Pinellia (Ban Xia), and Roasted Ginger (Pao Jiang). After more than twenty doses, Spleen-Qi gradually recovered, appetite increased, and all symptoms resolved suddenly.
A widow suffered from abdominal distension and hypochondriac pain, internal heat, afternoon tidal fever, irregular menstruation, limb soreness and numbness, and intermittent expectoration. Previous treatment with Qi-clearing and phlegm-resolving herbs caused throat discomfort, green-yellow leukorrhea, and abdominal/hypochondriac bloating. Subsequent use of Qi-moving agents led to chest oppression and intermittent limb numbness. This was due to depression and anger injuring the Liver and Spleen, worsened by previous medications. In the morning, she took Gui Pi Tang to resolve Spleen depression and generate Spleen-Qi; in the evening, Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) to generate Liver Blood and clear Liver Fire. After taking these for over a hundred doses, all symptoms resolved.
A woman suffered from chronic malaria accompanied by leukorrhea, with extreme thirst and fatigue after attacks. I used Qi Wei Bai Zhu San (Seven-Ingredient Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) with Ophiopogon (Mai Men Dong) and Schisandra (Wu Wei Zi), prepared in large doses for her to drink freely. Upon recurrence, symptoms were slightly alleviated, so I switched to Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang with Poria and Pinellia, curing her in ten doses. To arrest malaria, I often use Codonopsis (Ren Shen) and Atractylodes Macrocephala (Bai Zhu) one tael each, with four taels of Ginger (Sheng Jiang), roasted and decocted, which stops the attack immediately. Alternatively, using a large dose of Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang with roasted Ginger yields even faster results.
A woman suffered from dizziness, expectoration, chest fullness, and asthma, relieved slightly by eating, plagued by leukorrhea for over twenty years without success from various medicines. I stated: This is Qi deficiency leading to Phlegm-Fluid retention; once the fluid resolves, the leukorrhea will heal. Thus, I used Liu Wei Di Huang Wan, showing efficacy within a month.
A woman suffered from tinnitus, chest stuffiness, internal heat, dry mouth, a sensation of a lump in the throat during coughing (plum-pit qi), difficulty swallowing, irregular menstruation, and leukorrhea. I diagnosed Liver-Spleen depression and stagnation, prescribing Gui Pi Tang with Pinellia, Gardenia, Cimicifuga (Sheng Ma), and Bupleurum, intermittently combined with Si Qi Tang and Bai Wan Zi (White Pills), resulting in recovery.
A woman suffered from acid regurgitation, chest fullness, poor appetite, loose stools, and irregular menstruation. After taking processed Qing Qi Hua Tan Wan (Clear Qi and Resolve Phlegm Pill), her knees swelled, she experienced alternating chills and fever, yellow-white leukorrhea, sallow complexion, and fatigue. I diagnosed Spleen-Stomach deficiency with Damp-Heat pouring downward, treating with Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang, doubling the dosage of Codonopsis and Atractylodes Macrocephala, adding Poria, Pinellia, and Roasted Ginger, resulting in recovery. If symptoms arise from anger, featuring fever, poor appetite, red swollen legs, or moist finger webs, use Liu Jun Zi Tang with Bupleurum and Cimicifuga, along with Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang.
A woman suffered from leukorrhea, limb weakness, and fatigue upon exertion. I stated: Limbs belong to Earth (Spleen/Stomach); this belongs to Spleen-Stomach deficiency with Damp-Phlegm pouring downward. She was cured using Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang and Ji Sheng Gui Pi Tang.
A woman over sixty suffered from yellow-white leukorrhea. Due to anger causing chest oppression and poor appetite, she took digestion-promoting and Qi-moving drugs, which instead caused phlegm-asthma, chest fullness, and hematochezia. I stated: This is Spleen-Qi deficiency failing to control blood and return it to its source. She was treated with Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang plus Poria, Pinellia, and Roasted Ginger; after four doses, all symptoms resolved suddenly. She then stabilized with Ba Zhen Tang plus Bupleurum and Stir-fried Gardenia.
