Answer: The Heart is the master of Blood. There is latent, chronic cold pathogen within. Due to the extreme deficiency after childbirth, the cold condenses with the Blood, causing Blood stasis that cannot dissipate. The rebellious Qi strikes the meridians of the Heart, thus causing heart pain. One should simply treat it with Da Yan Mi Tang (Great Rock Honey Decoction). Once the cold is eliminated, the blood vessels become warm and the meridians unobstructed, and the heart pain will cease naturally. If one mistakenly treats it as an injury from retained blood and uses purgatives to attack the stasis, the deficiency will become extreme, and the cold will intensify further. If the cold in the Heart collaterals becomes severe and transmits to the regular meridians, it transforms into Zhen Xin Tong (True Heart Pain), where morning onset leads to evening death, and evening onset leads to morning death. Such matters must not be treated lightly or with careless medication.
Da Yan Mi Tang (Great Rock Honey Decoction)
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus, washed), Guan Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 2 liang), Xi Xin (Asari Radix), Xiao Cao (Radix Polygalae Tenuifoliae seedling, also known as Yuan Zhi miao) (each 1 liang).
Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder. Take 5 qian per dose, add 3 zhan of water, decoct until 1 zhan remains, remove the dregs, and take warm. Time is not restricted.
Si Shen San (Four Spirits Powder): Treats postpartum retained blood that fails to dissipate, accumulating into masses, causing urgent pain, as well as sour pain in the heart and abdomen accompanied by dysentery.
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Chi Shao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra).
Grind the above into a fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose, mix with warm wine and ingest. Time is not restricted.
Answer: After childbirth, lying in bed causes Blood deficiency which generates internal heat. Furthermore, excessive exposure to coolness during spring and autumn, combined with the steaming dampness of the ground entering through the feet, results in Hong Jiao (Jiaogong disease / Beriberi-like condition). Its manifestations include feverish oppression, muscle twitching and cramping, palpitations with fright, irritability, vomiting, and rebellious Qi ascending. These are all its signs. One should simply administer Xiao Xu Ming Tang (Minor Continuation of Life Decoction); three doses will surely cure it. If physicians mistakenly use drugs to purge defeated blood to attack it, the Blood will be depleted, and the disease will increase in severity.
Xiao Xu Ming Tang (Minor Continuation of Life Decoction) [This medicine is suitable for both antenatal and postpartum periods, or when wind pathogen invades due to extreme deficiency causing body-wide pain, or when wheezing is unstable. Add She Xiang (Musk) and Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma). Use 2 zhan of water per dose. After decocting and pouring out the liquid, add She Xiang separately, boil for one or two more boils, and take before meals. One or two doses yield divine effects.]
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Guan Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) (each 1 liang), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (5 liang), Xiong (Chuan Xiong, Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (each 1 liang), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, one piece, peeled), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (1.5 liang).
Cut the above ingredients. Take 3 qian per dose, add 2 zhan of water, decoct until 0.8 zhan remains, remove dregs, and take warm. Time is not restricted.
Da Qu Feng San (Great Wind-Expelling Powder): Treats sudden stroke nearly leading to death, wind attacking the body and five zang organs, slurred speech, mental confusion, or walking in damp conditions transforming into Hong Jiao (Jiaogong disease). This formula is particularly excellent.
Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba) (2 liang), Xiong (Chuan Xiong, Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (1.5 liang), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, roasted) (1.5 liang), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, peeled and tipped, stir-fried) (each 2 fen).
Cut the above ingredients. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1.5 zhan of water, decoct until 0.6 zhan remains, remove dregs. Take slightly warm at any time. Stop when sweating occurs. Another method adds Jing Li (Calami Juice) 5 yi for simultaneous decoction, which yields great verification. If it is Hong Jiao, add Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 1 liang, Gan Mu Gua (Chaenomelis Fructus) 1 liang, and remove Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma).
