Answer: The symptom of body pain presents various patterns. If the exterior syndrome of Taiyang (Greater Yang) is unresolved, according to treatment principles, body pain should occur. If Taiyang is affected by dampness, the entire body will feel painful. If the pulse is deep and there is spontaneous diarrhea, the pain belongs to a Yin pattern. If the body feels heavy, the back is stiff, there is colicky abdominal pain, throat discomfort, and the body feels as if beaten with a club, this is a Yin Toxin syndrome. If wind pathogens invade the skin due to deficiency, causing a wandering itching sensation like needle pricks throughout the body, or if blood and qi are damaged leading to movements resembling gu poison (a type of poisoning), Chao Yuanfang refers to this as "Wind Gu."
Hugu San (Tiger Bone Powder): Treats body pain caused by Blood Wind attacking and flowing in women.
Ingredients: Hu Jing Gu (Os Tigris Tibia, 1.5 liang), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi, 1 liang), Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong, 1 liang), Haitong Pi (Cortex Phellodendri, 1 liang), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 1 liang), Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae, 1 liang), Tianma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae, 1 liang), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, 1 liang), Gusuibu (Os Dinosaurii, 1 liang), Qianghuo (Rhizoma Notopterygii, 0.5 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Take 1 qian per dose, mixed with warm wine on an empty stomach.
Toujing Tang (Penetrating Meridian Decoction): Treats body pain.
Ingredients: Wuji San (Five Accumulations Powder, 0.5 liang), Sheng Fuzi (Raw Radix Aconiti Lateralis, 2 qian).
Preparation and Administration: Add the above ingredients to two cups of water, along with seven slices of fresh ginger and two jujubes. Decoct until one-eighth remains. Strain the dregs, add a small amount of Shexiang (Moschus), boil for three to four more boils, and take orally at any time without restriction.
Shexiang Wan (Musk Pill): Treats Baihu Lijie (White Tiger Intermittent Joint Pain), various wind-induced pains that wander without fixed location, feeling like insect bites, worse at night and quiet during the day, as well as all unexplained pains in hands and feet.
Ingredients: Chuanwu (Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii, three large octagonal ones, raw), Quanxie (Scorpio, twenty-one pieces, raw), Heidou (Semen Sojae Praeparatum, twenty-one grains, raw), Dilong (Pheretima, 0.5 liang, raw).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Add Banzi (half zi, approx. 2.5 fen) of Shexiang (Moschus), grind together, and bind with rice paste to form pills the size of mung beans. Take seven pills per dose; ten pills for severe cases. Take at night when the stomach is empty, washed down with warm wine. Mild sweating of cold sweat indicates recovery. I obtained this prescription and found that for Lijie and unexplained pains, one or two doses bring relief. While serving in Shechuan, a noblewoman suffered from wandering pain throughout her body, which flared up in the evening, feeling like insects biting her muscles. Others treated it as ghostly possession. I said, "This is exactly Lijie disease." Three doses cured her. (Note: One "zi" equals 2.5 fen.)
