Answer: The movement of Qi and Blood (vital energy and blood) extends outward to the meridians (channels) and inward to nourish the Zang-Fu organs. This process is primarily governed by the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) and Ren Mai (Conception Vessel). If excessive labor or strain causes injury to the Zang-Fu organs, leading to deficiency in the Chong and Ren meridians, they lose their ability to constrain and control the blood. Consequently, sudden profuse bleeding occurs, termed "Beng Xia" (Sudden Collapse/Downward Flow). The Classics state: "When the San Jiao (Triple Burner) meridians are severed, it is named Blood Beng." Bleeding that is red due to heat pathogen is called "Yang Beng"; bleeding that is white/pale due to cold pathogen is called "Yin Beng." The white discharge resembles mucus; the red resembles dark crimson fluid; the yellow resembles rotting melon flesh; the blue/green resembles indigo; and the black resembles clotted blood. These are collectively known as the "Five Bengs." (Should be read in conjunction with Question 6).
Jiao Ai Tang for Yang Beng: Treats women suffering from Qi and Blood injury due to overwork, deficiency and damage to the Chong and Ren meridians, excessive menstrual flow, persistent dripping leakage, continuous bleeding through the night, and pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions.
Ingredients: Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin, stir-fried), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Licorice Root, Gancao) (each 2 liang); Artemisiae Argyi Folium (Mugwort Leaf, Aiyè), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Donggui) (each 3 liang); Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao), Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudihuang) (each 4 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Process the above ingredients into a decoction form. Take 3 qian per dose, with one cup of water, boil down to 0.6 cups. Strain the dregs and take warm. Take on an empty stomach before meals. For severe cases, administer continuously throughout the night.
Huang Qin San: Treats Beng Zhong Xia Xue (profuse uterine bleeding).
Preparation and Administration: Powder the Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, Scutellaria Root). Take 1 qian per dose, mixed with wine quenched by a heated weight (Chengzhui Jiu). While hemostatic agents are commonly used for Beng Zhong, this method treats via "Cheng Yin" (leveraging yin/cold nature to counteract heat), as stated in the Classics: "When heaven is hot and earth is warm, the menstrual waters boil and overflow."
Gu Jing Wan for Yin Beng: Treats women with weak Chong and Ren meridians, irregular menstruation, excessive flow that does not stop, and persistent dripping.
Ingredients: Artemisiae Argyi Folium (Mugwort Leaf, Aiyè, vinegar-fried), Cornu Cervi Degelatinum Pulveratum (Deer Antler Glaze Powder, Lujiaoshuang), Caulis Longan (Fulonggan, also known as Zao Xin Tu/Cooking Stove Earth) (equal parts each), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ginger, Ganjiang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above into powder. Melt Cornu Cervi Degelatinum (Deer Antler Gelatin, Ejiao) and mix with the medicine while hot to form pills the size of Sophora seeds (Wutongzi). Take 50 pills before meals with light vinegar soup.
Chi Long Dan: Treats persistent Beng and Lou (bleeding and spotting), and pain caused by residual blood stasis.
Ingredients: Yuyuliang (Halloysitum Rubrum, Yuanyu Liang, calcined), Sepiae Endoconcha (Cuttlefish Bone, Wuzhegu), Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum (Deer Antler Velvet, Lurong, wine-roasted), Os Draconis (Dragon Bone, Longgu), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ginger, Ganjiang), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Donggui), Shiyanzi (Stone Swallow Egg/Fossil, calcined), Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin, stir-fried).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above into powder. Use a paste made of wine and vinegar to bind and form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 50 pills with warm wine. Taking with Mugwort Vinegar Soup is also acceptable.
