*Daquan* (Complete Collection) states: After childbirth, the zang organs are deficient, and the heart spirit is startled and palpitates. This occurs because the body is weak and heart qi is insufficient, allowing wind-pathogen to invade the Heart meridian. Alternatively, due to fear, worry, or distress, the heart qi becomes affected by wind-pathogen. When the pathogen gathers in the heart, it causes fright and unease; if the fright persists, palpitations become unstable. The manifestations include eyes that do not move or turn, inability to move, and a pulse that is beating but weak, which indicates a condition of fright and palpitations.
Xue Lizhai states: The heart governs the human body, and the heart governs blood. When heart blood is deficient, the spirit fails to remain in its residence, leading to fright and palpitations. Treatment should primarily focus on tonifying blood and qi.
*Daquan* states: Postpartum wind-stroke presenting with mental confusion arises because the heart governs blood, and blood qi connects with Ying-Wei and the zang-fu organs, circulating through the meridians. Childbirth injures both blood and qi, causing deficiency in all five zang organs and insufficiency of Ying-Wei. Consequently, wind-pathogen invades, causing the heart spirit to become confused and unstable.
Xue Lizhai states: For postpartum confusion, treatment should primarily focus on greatly tonifying blood and qi, supplemented by subsequent formulas. Wind is merely a false manifestation of extreme deficiency; consolidating the primordial root will cause various diseases to recede spontaneously. If one treats only the wind, it will hasten the danger.
Shenzhen notes: The above four points describe postpartum conditions of fright, palpitations, and confusion. *Jiyin Gangmu* states: Conditions ranging from muteness to fright, palpitations, and confusion are attributed by some to qi and blood deficiency, by others to foul blood entering the heart, and by still others to wind-pathogen invasion; all are termed "Heart Wind." However, where this wind comes from and how it should be treated was not fully elucidated by predecessors, who merely spoke of treating phlegm and wind. Zhu Danxi and Xue Lizhai advocated primarily great tonification of blood and qi, each having their own insights, to be applied according to clinical judgment. I believe that for postpartum muteness, causes include foul blood, dampness, hot-phlegm, and wind-heat; these are primarily caused by excess pathogens and external infections, neglecting deficiency. This is also a flaw in previous theoretical formulations. As for fright, palpitations, and confusion, they naturally result from blood deficiency and insufficient heart qi. *Daquan* insists that wind-pathogen gathering in the heart causes these syndromes, a statement that is highly erroneous. Xue Lizhai’s view that one should only consolidate the root and not specifically treat wind has contributed significantly to future scholars.
*Daquan* states: Postpartum fright caused by foul blood rushing to the heart leads to drowsiness, mania, and hallucinations of seeing ghosts or spirits. It is appropriate to use Da Sheng Ze Lan San (Great Sage Lavender Decoction) from *Ju Fang* (The Bureau Formulary), administered with Chen Sha (Cinnabar) and Zao Ren (Suanzaoren, Semen Ziziphi Spinosae) decoction.
Xue Lizhai notes: This is due to blood deficiency, where the spirit does not reside in its house; it cannot be treated without nourishing primordial qi.
