*Chanbao Baiwen* states: The etiology of fetal movement accompanied by abdominal pain is diverse. It may arise from consuming food that is too cold or too hot, ingesting substances that induce wind-toxins, or engaging in sexual intercourse with vigorous movements that vibrate the bones and joints, thereby injuring the fetal sac. The clinical manifestations often include vomiting and disharmony of qi. If excessive intake of hot-natured medicines causes interference between qi and blood, one should immediately administer medications to regulate qi and calm the fetus. Otherwise, it may evolve into *taidou* (threatened miscarriage with vaginal bleeding), which becomes difficult to stabilize.
Chen Liangfu states: Fetal restlessness during pregnancy is caused by deficiency of the Chong and Ren meridians, resulting in an unstable conception. It may be due to excessive alcohol consumption and sexual activity, damaging and disturbing the fetus; accidental trauma or falls, disturbing the fetus; anger injuring the liver, or emotional stagnation, disturbing the blood vessels; excessive intake of warm-tonifying medicines or violation of dietary/medicinal taboos, disturbing the fetus; maternal illness causing fetal disturbance, in which case treating the mother's illness will naturally stabilize the fetus; or inherent fetal instability affecting the mother, in which case calming the fetus will naturally cure the mother.
*Daquan* states: Fetal movement during pregnancy may result from improper diet and daily life, invasion of wind-cold into the Chong and Ren meridians, physical trauma such as falls or blows, anger injuring liver fire, or spleen qi deficiency. Treatment should be based on identifying the specific cause. Mild cases present only with restlessness, while severe cases inevitably lead to miscarriage. If the face is red and the tongue is cyanotic, the fetus has died. If the face is cyanotic, the tongue is red, and there is foaming at the mouth, the mother has died. If the lips and mouth are cyanotic with foam exuding from the corners, both mother and fetus have died; careful observation and treatment are required.
Shenzhai notes: The above three passages describe the syndrome of fetal restlessness during pregnancy. There must be a cause for this condition. The two passages from *Chanbao* explore the etiology, while the three passages from *Liangfang* provide methods for verifying life or death following fetal disturbance.
*Nuke Zhengzong* states: Both fetal movement and threatened miscarriage (*tailou*) involve vaginal bleeding. However, fetal movement is accompanied by abdominal pain, whereas *tailou* is not. Therefore, fetal movement requires qi-regulating treatments, while *tailou* requires heat-clearing treatments. This is generally due to long-term uterine deficiency leading to threatened miscarriage. The danger is akin to a candle flickering in the wind and cannot be compared to normal parturition. One should urgently administer *Duzhong Wan* prophylactically.
*Daquan* states: "Jingtai" (startled fetus) occurs when pregnancy is nearing term and the fetal spirit is fully formed. Trauma from falls can injure the fetus, even leading to vaginal bleeding and unconsciousness. To verify whether the mother and fetus are safe, one should refer to the preceding discussions for treatment guidance.
