Wu Shuqing stated: Dingxiang Jiao'ai Tang (Clove and Donkey-hide Gelatin Decoction) is used to treat women with metrorrhagia and metrostaxis that does not stop. This is due to insufficiency of Heart Qi, compounded by overwork and irregular diet, resulting in both Chi pulses (Kidney pulses at the radial artery) being wiry, tight, and surging, yet powerless upon deep pressure. The symptoms include a subjective sensation of coldness below the umbilicus as if it were ice, seeking thick clothing and quilts to ward off the cold; although there is abundant leukorrhea and white slippery discharge, occasionally blood resembling dripping roof water is discharged, sometimes with a small amount of fresh red blood, and the Right Chi pulse occasionally shows slight surging. If the discharge comes down violently like dripping roof water, it indicates a wiry and urgent pulse, signifying excessive Cold. The occasional appearance of a surging pulse indicates minor Heat. In summary, the wiry and urgent pulse represents an excess of Northern Cold Water energy; the occasional surging pulse represents Fire in the Mingmen (Gate of Life) and Baoluo (Uterine Collaterals). An abundance of black clots and a scarcity of red blood combined present the appearance of leaking roof water. This formula uses Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Dingxiang (Clove), Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), and raw Aiye (Mugwort Leaf).
Wu Shuqing stated: Lurong Wan (Deer Antler Pill) treats menorrhagia with dark,瘀black (stasis-black) color, and in severe cases, metrorrhagia. Symptoms include shortness of breath, extreme coldness in the umbilical and abdominal regions, and profuse sweating like rain, with both Chi pulses being minute and faint. This is caused by deficiency and decline of the Chong and Ren vessels, where Wind-Cold pathogens lodge in the uterus, leading to an inability of Qi to secure the blood. Moxibustion on Guanyuan (CV-4) for one hundred moxa cones can be applied. Danxi considered purple-black blood as a sign of Heat, whereas the瘀black here results from Cold in the Lower Jiao causing blood stasis and blackening; their treatment methods differ. However, in women, the Qi Sea is located superiorly, and the Blood Sea inferiorly; thus, warming the Lower Jiao allows Qi to ascend and Blood to circulate. Deer antler takes form from Blood and grows through Qi, with Blood rising with Qi to form horns; therefore, it enters the Blood level to promote generation and ascent. It is assisted by Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) and Aiye (Mugwort Leaf) for warming, by Chishizhi (Kaolin) and Yuyuliang (Halloysitum Rubrum) for stabilizing and securing, by Baiye (Calamus Leaf or Artemisia Leaf, contextually often referring to cooling hemostatics like Xianhecao or similar, but literally Bai Ye) for clearing heat, and by Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), and Xuduan (Dipsacus Root) for tonification. This is indeed a comprehensive formula for treating deficiency-cold of the Lower Yuan. The omission of Renshen (Ginseng Root) implies a specific intention, which can be inferred from the rationale behind moxibustion on Guanyuan.
Wu Shuqing stated: Fulonggan San (Dragon's House Earth Powder) treats metrorrhagia occurring out of season due to labor injury and deficiency of the Chong and Ren vessels. The discharge may resemble bean curd dregs, form blood clots, mix five colors, or combine red and white. Symptoms include cold pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions, prolonged duration without cessation, leading to sallow emaciation, dry mouth, reduced appetite, weakness in the four limbs, and deficiency-induced irritability with palpitations. The "five colors" correspond to the colors of the Five Zang organs; prolonged metrorrhagia causes Qi sinking of the Five Zang organs, preventing normal blood transformation, hence the manifestation of five colors. Generally, Blood is generated by Qi and transformed in the Middle Jiao; Qi originates from the Lower Yuan and is cultivated by the Spleen and Stomach. For umbilical and abdominal pain, indicating Cold in the Lower Yuan, Aiye (Mugwort Leaf) is used to warm. For sallow emaciation, reduced appetite, and limb weakness, indicating Cold in the Middle Jiao, Ganjiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome) is used to warm. Fulonggan (Hearth Earth) possesses the subtle interaction of Fire generating Earth. With Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) as the sovereign herb, it supports the Liver and moves turbidity. Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) and Gancao (Licorice Root) harmonize Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive levels) and regulate the blood vessels. Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) and Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) tonify Metal and Water (Lung and Kidney) to treat deficiency irritability and dry mouth. Chishizhi (Kaolin) and Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) nourish Blood to secure collapse and stop bleeding. By employing methods of unblocking, astringing, warming, and moistening, this is indeed an excellent formula for treating prolonged depletion and visceral cold.
