[Ju Danxi] In treating diseases related to pregnancy and childbirth, one should differentiate and treat based on the Jueyin Meridian (Jueyin Jing). One must strictly avoid damaging the Stomach Qi (Wei Qi) and the Upper Sanjiao (Triple Burner), which is referred to as the "Three Prohibitions" (San Jin): no sweating therapy, no purgative therapy, and no diuretic therapy. If sweating therapy is misused, the consequences are similar to those of premature purgation in Cold Damage (Shanghan) disease; if bowel movement promotion is misused, it leads to rapid pulse and damage to Spleen Qi; if diuresis is misused, it leads to the loss of body fluids and dryness in the Stomach. The principle of preparing medicine is: as long as these three prohibitions are not violated, Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) will naturally harmonize, and symptoms of cold and heat will cease. For example, if thirst occurs, Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) can be used; for Qi deficiency, Huangqi Tang (Astragalus Decoction) is appropriate; for blood stasis with stabbing pain, Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) is added for invigorating blood and nourishing blood; for abdominal pain, Shaoyao (Peony Root) is added for softening the Liver and relieving pain. Generally speaking, postpartum illnesses caused by exogenous epidemic pathogens should be treated by modifying Chaihu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction); miscellaneous syndromes should be treated by modifying Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction). One should carefully observe the pulse and symptoms before applying treatment. In summary, externally harmonize Ying and Wei, internally regulate urination and defecation; the treatment method is similar to that for complicated syndromes of Cold Damage (Shanghan Huai Zheng).
[Li Zhongnan] Diseases during pregnancy should primarily focus on calming the fetus and smoothing Qi flow. If external contraction of Wind, Cold, Summerheat, or Dampness, or internal injury from Joy, Anger, Worry, Thought, Sadness, Fear, or Fright leads to other diseases, the treatment methods are no different from those for men, and one should seek treatments in the respective syndrome categories. However, when treating conditions other than fetal calming during pregnancy, one must carefully examine and deliberate any medications that might disturb the fetus.
[Ju Danxi] During pregnancy, one should clear heat and nourish blood. For calming the fetus before delivery, Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) and Huangqin (Scutellaria Baicalensis Root) are excellent herbs. When pregnancy approaches one month, take Sanbu Wan (Three Tonics Pill) with added fried Xiangfu (Cyperus Rotundus Rhizome) and fried Shaoyao (Peony Root), formed into pills with steamed wheat dough. Alternatively, use Sanbu Wan to suppress internal heat, forming pills with Shengdihuang Paste (Rehmannia Glutinosa Paste). [Huangqin, Huanglian (Coptis Chinensis Rhizome), and Huangbai (Phellodendron Amurense Bark) are ground into powder and formed into pills with Rehmannia paste.] At eight or nine months of pregnancy, one must smooth Qi flow using Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus) and Sugen (Perilla Stem). In the eighth or ninth month, if fire agitates the fetus causing rebellious Qi leading to panting and urgency, Tiaohuangqin (Premium Scutellaria Baicalensis Root) and Xiangfu can be ground into powder and taken with water. Tiaohuangqin should be selected from those that sink in water, indicating density. To secure the fetus, use half a qian of Dihuang (Rehmannia Glutinosa Root), one qian each of Danggui Shenwei (Angelica Sinensis Root Body and Tail), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Shaoyao (Peony Root), and Chenpi (Citrus Reticulata Peel), one and a half qian of Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), three fen of Gancao (Licorice Root), half a qian each of Huangqin (Scutellaria Baicalensis Root) and Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), a small amount of Huanglian (Coptis Chinensis Rhizome) and fried Huangbai (Phellodendron Amurense Bark), seven complete leaves of Sangshangyangerteng (Lonicera Japonica Flower/Stem, also known as Jinyinhua), and fourteen grains of Nuomi (Glutinous Rice). Chop and decoct for administration. For blood deficiency causing unrest, use Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin). For pain, use Suosha (Amomum Tsao-ko Fruit) because it promotes blood and Qi circulation.
The *Yijian Zhi* records: During the Zhenghe era, the granddaughter-in-law of Duke Cai Lu fell ill at term. Imperial physicians believed it was a Yang-pattern Cold Damage and feared fetal expulsion, so they dared not administer cooling agents. Zhang Rui arrived, examined her, and said, "The fetus has been in the womb for ten months and is about to be born; what medicine could ruin it?" He then prescribed according to standard methods and instructed doubling the dose. Half a day later, the child was born, and the illness disappeared. The next day, the woman suffered severe diarrhea and throat closure preventing food intake. Other doctors criticized his error again, saying, "These two ailments are like ice and charcoal (mutually exclusive), and she has just given birth; even a life-saving deity would find this difficult." Zhang Rui said, "Do not worry; I will cure her today." He took dozens of pills and had her swallow them. Her throat immediately opened, and the diarrhea stopped. At the full month celebration, Duke Lu poured wine to toast him, saying, "Your medical skills are divine. I dare not ask how, but may I ask how one medicine cured two ailments?" Zhang Rui replied, "This is not recorded in the classics; I acted upon my intuition. The medicine I previously used was Fuzi Lizhong Wan (Aconite and Poria Decocted Pill) wrapped in Zixue (Purple Snow). At that time, the throat was blocked; only a supreme-cold medicine could open it. Once swallowed, Zixue dissolved completely. What reached the abdomen was the power of Fuzi (Aconite Lateral Root), thus curing both ailments with one dose." Duke Lu was greatly amazed.
Wang Ji treated a woman who had experienced transverse and breech deliveries seven or eight times, with all children failing to survive. Wang Ji's pulse diagnosis revealed fine, choppy, and slightly wiry pulses. He said, "This is a combination of Qi and Blood deficiency with Heat." Someone asked, "Only when Qi and Blood are sufficient can pregnancy occur; if Qi and Blood are deficient, how can the fetus survive?" Wang Ji said, "Her tall and thin physique with fine and soggy pulses indicates Qi and Blood deficiency. Her bluish complexion and wiry pulse indicate frequent flaring of Liver Fire. The floating and slippery pulses at the Chi position suggest that Blood deficiency is mild while Qi deficiency is severe. It is suitable to use Buyin Wan (Nourish Yin Pill), removing Chenpi (Citrus Reticulata Peel), and doubling the dosage of Xiangfu (Cyperus Rotundus Rhizome), Renshen (Ginseng Root), and Huangqi (Astragalus Membranaceus Root). Form into honeyed pills and take continuously. Over a year later, she delivered smoothly and raised a son."
Baosheng Wan (from *Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang*) nourishes the fetus and benefits blood, calming and harmonizing the uterus. It treats improper management during pregnancy, or fetal unrest due to overexertion, accompanied by heavy pain in the waist and abdomen, placental obstruction, leaking of amniotic fluid, intermittent lochia, uterine pathology preventing conception, or failure to conceive after conception. It treats cases where pregnancy cannot be maintained, resulting in emaciation and dryness, delayed delivery despite full term, lack of fetal movement, risk of miscarriage, or improper timing/intervention during labor causing early disturbance, premature lochia, dry placenta, leading to dystocia, transverse/breech presentation, extreme pain and confusion, prolonged labor, intrauterine fetal death, cold abdomen, blue-black lips, and vomiting of cold foam. It also treats postpartum evil blood rushing upward causing fainting and unconsciousness, panting and sweating, residual blood stasis causing umbilical/abdominal pain, alternating chills and fever. Or it treats weakness and emaciation due to labor damage, yellow complexion, thin body, palpitations, night sweats, anorexia, gradually developing into postpartum consumptive disease (Rulao). Regular consumption during the last month strengthens Qi, nourishes the fetus, facilitates normal delivery, and moistens the fetus for easier birth. Regular postpartum consumption nourishes blood and Qi, harmonizes Yin and Yang, tightens the interstices, solidifies the Zang-Fu organs, treats wind-deficiency, and eliminates chronic cold.

Taking with young boy's urine is best; if nauseous, mix with half wine. Pregnant women taking one dose daily near term will deliver without pain; or taking five to ten doses increases appetite due to medicinal power.
Longxu Tang (Dragon Whisker Soup) treats body pain pre- and postpartum. *Baoshi Lun* states: Body pain results from weak musculature allowing Wind-Evil to invade meridians, where evil Qi fights righteous Qi between bone and flesh, causing pain and immobility. Longxu Tang is indicated. If pregnancy causes body pain, it is due to excessive labor. Otherwise, for Wind-Cold invading meridians, Yutong Wan (Pain Relief Pill) or Fangfeng Tang (Saposhnikovia Decoction) are indicated. For postpartum body pain with immobility due to labor, it is because postpartum joints open, blood vessels flow freely, and weak Qi causes blood stagnation between bone and flesh, leading to urgent meridians, inability to turn back or move limbs, burning body heat,钉-like head pain. Unaware physicians may mistakenly sweat for Cold Damage, causing complications. This formula is suitable.
Astragalus Root (Huangqi, 1 liang, honey-roasted) Angelica Root (Danggui, rhizome removed, soaked in wine) Achyranthes Root (Niuxi, leaves removed, soaked in wine overnight; if urgent, steam in wine until cooked) Atractylodes Rhizome (Baizhu) Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng, rhizome removed) Actaea Rhizome (Duohuo, rhizome removed) Licorice Root (Gancao, 2.5 qian each)

Ligusticum Rhizome (Chuanxiong, 2 liang) Angelica Root (Danggui, 3 liang)
Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, decoct with 1 cup water and 0.2 cup wine until 0.7 cup remains. Warm and take. Another method uses coarse powder, 4 qian per dose, 0.7 cup water, 0.3 cup wine, decoct to 0.7 cup, take hot. Prepare this before delivery. After delivery, take quickly. Twice daily for three days, once daily thereafter. Another name is Xionggui Tang (Ligusticum and Angelica Decoction), using equal parts chopped and decocted in water. Specifically treats blood loss from trauma, fetal injury, postpartum hemorrhage, metrorrhagia, metal wounds, tooth extraction, excessive blood loss causing irritability, dizziness, fainting, heavy head, dim vision, feeling of falling. Add Shaoyao (Peony Root) for postpartum dizziness. Also called Guixiang San (Cinnamon and Fragrance Powder) for unbearable postpartum abdominal pain; add equal parts Guixin (Cinnamon Heart), decoct with wine and young boy's urine for immediate effect. Also called Danggui Tang (Angelica Decoction) for dead fetus or restless fetus; decoct with wine and water, take several doses. If fetus is dead, it will be expelled; if alive, it will be secured. Highly effective. Also called Hupo San (Amber Powder); take near term to facilitate delivery and treat postpartum ailments. Also called Yangrou Tang (Mutton Soup) for deficiency/emaciation, abdominal pain, alternating chills/fever, shortness of breath, dizziness, spontaneous sweating, abdominal cramping. Take 1 liang lean mutton, 10 slices ginger, 2 cups water, decoct to 0.6 cup, warm and take. Also treats postpartum body damage, blood rushing to heart, abdominal distension/Qi blockage. For difficult transverse delivery or dead fetus, first fry 1 heaping measure of Black Soybeans (Heidoudou), decoct with 1 cup water and 1 cup young boy's urine, add 4 qian powder, decoct to 1 cup, divide into two doses. Repeat if ineffective. For postpartum evil blood rushing to heart causing coma/panting/pain, use black beans plus half a heaping measure of fresh ginger juice. For intestinal toxicity, take 1.5 qian with 0.5 qian fried Sophora Flower (Huaihua) powder, decoct in 1 cup water to 0.6 cup, take anytime; blood clots passed in three days cures. For postpartum headache, add Schizonepeta (Jingjie); also for hematemesis. For dystocia, use equal parts Baicaoshuang (Charred Grass Ash) and Xiangbaizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root) as powder, named Wu Jin San (Black Gold Powder). Take 2 qian with 1 heaping measure each of young boy's urine and good vinegar, soak in boiling water. One dose effective, severe cases require second dose for delivery. Another method uses Wuji San (Five Accumulations Powder) with vinegar decoction to induce labor. For metrorrhagia/leukorrhea with excessive blood loss not stopping with Xionggui Tang, use fried Cyperus (Xiangfu) powder, 1 liang with 1 qian Licorice powder, taken with clear rice drink, named Shunyuan Tang. For white leukorrhea, add 0.5 liang Shaoyao (Peony Root) to Shunyuan Tang. Some say Cyperus depletes Qi, but Scholar Xu says it nourishes blood and Qi, a fairy medicine for women, suitable even for the weak. Also treats male/female hematemesis/hematochezia and blood loss from various syndromes; use this medicine with rice drink to form pills with Charred Grass Ash powder, take 100+ pills, or other ash medicines. Do not abruptly stop bleeding with drying/astringent agents, as this causes stagnation/corruption and other syndromes. Generally, blood does not move because Qi is disordered; when Qi is balanced, blood follows its path, avoiding reckless flow. Cyperus excels at guiding Qi, use without doubt.
Fanhun Dan (Soul-Returning Pill) treats critical conditions pre- and postpartum.
Use Chijian (Wild Gastrodia Elata/Tianma), leaves resemble Artemisia, purple flowers like Polygonum, seeds named Chongweizi, also known as Yimucao (Motherwort), Dazha, Zhenwei, or Fudan. Collect on Dragon Boat Festival, shade dry. Use leaves, flowers, and seeds, grind in porcelain vessel to fine powder, mix with refined honey into bullet-sized pills. Chew and take according to syndrome. Roots burned to retain nature, ground, taken with wine; efficacy comparable to Heishen San (Black Divine Powder). For prepartum abdominal pain/sounds, take with warm rice drink. For pre/postpartum stabbing abdominal pain, fetal unrest with continuous bleeding, decoct Qinjiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Root) and Nuomi (Glutinous Rice) in water, or modify Danggui Tang. For infertility, take with warm wine. Taking 10-20 pills can induce pregnancy.
1. Dead fetus in womb: Caused by sudden organ heat steaming the fetus. Fetus does not stay in uterus; symptoms include cold pain in abdomen, foamy urine, abdominal distension, cold limbs, blue nails. At delivery, this pill calms soul/spirit, harmonizes Qi/blood, breaks blood/nourishes deficiency/stops pain, takes with 70% wine/young boy's urine.
2. Dystocia: Fetus feeds on maternal blood for ten months; residual blood forms mass (Erzhen/Pillow), moves first during labor, wrapping fetus in bad blood causing difficulty. Or postpartum incomplete expulsion causing stabbing pain/rushing evil matter. Take with 70% wine/young boy's urine.
3. Dirty face/red complexion, retained placenta: Postpartum organs weak, five-heart irritability, blood flows into placenta making it hard to exit, causing chills/fever/cold sweat. Expelling bad blood allows placenta to exit like a cut belt. Take with 70% wine/young boy's urine, or Mint Juice/Salt Water.
4. Postpartum day 3, unable to rise/sleep, visual darkness/spots: Postpartum Qi/blood unsettled, circulating to organs; entering Liver causes dim vision (An Feng/Dark Wind), treated as wind. Or blood heat/thirst/mania/hallucinations. Take with 70% wine/young boy's urine, or Mint Juice.
5. Postpartum dry mouth/heart oppression/thirst: Qi/blood unsettled, eating hot noodles causes stagnation/heat/thirst (Xiong Ge Yong Sheng/Chest Diaphragm Fullness), or temporal pain/yawning/palpitations/shortness of breath/emaciation/anorexia/blood-wind fever/limb numbness/joint pain. Take with 70% warm rice drink/young boy's urine.
6. Postpartum limb edema/chills-fever: Bad blood flows to organs/limbs, stays long, turns to pus, causing panting/stranguria/cough/chest oppression/nausea/sour vomit/flank pain/weakness. Take with warm wine.
7. Postpartum alternating chills-fever: Bad blood enters Heart causing heat, Spleen causing cold, resembling malaria, affecting umbilical...
