Treats difficult labor where the fetus has not been delivered after three days.
Swallow three egg yolks, taken with a small amount of vinegar.
Treats transverse presentation and intrauterine fetal death.
Take one egg from each of three different surnames, one qian (approx. 3.7g) of salt from each of three different surnames, and one zhan (approx. 200ml) of water from each of three different surnames. Mix them together. Boil five to seven times, divide into two doses to be taken warm. Have the parturient woman lie with her head facing east and take the medicine; the fetus will be delivered immediately.
Treats prolonged difficult labor where qi and strength are exhausted and delivery is impossible; this is considered an old disease.
Red Adzuki Bean (Chi Xiaodou) (two sheng)
Use nine sheng of water, boil until cooked, extract the juice. Add one liang (approx. 37g) of roasted Minghuang Jiao (gelatin) and decoct together. After a short while, take five he (approx. 60ml). If ineffective, take again. Delivery will occur within three or four doses.
Treats difficult labor where the fetus has not been delivered after three days.
Swallow fourteen Huai Zi (Sophora japonica seeds); delivery will follow. The *Guangji Fang* records using Yi Huang (Polygonatum Rhizome? Note: Context suggests Puhuang/Floating Pollen Typhae, but text says Pu Huang) one he. The *Qianjin Fang*, *Jiyan Fang*, and Cui's medical formulas agree.
Another formula: Powder the Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis), mix with wine, and take one cun bi (approx. 5-10g volume) as a dose.
For lower back pain at the onset of labor, this may be taken.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) (powdered) Ru Xiang (Frankincense Resin) (each one qian) Chen Sha (Cinnabar) (half qian)
Grind the above three ingredients together. At the time of labor, urgently use one egg white to mix the powder, then dilute with fresh ginger juice. Take cold. For transverse or breech presentation, it will immediately correct to a normal position, ensuring safety for both mother and child. This formula was transmitted from Shi Hanqing of Ezhou and has proven effective repeatedly.
For lower back pain at the onset of labor, this may be taken.
Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis Rhizome) Mo Yao (Myrrh) Bai Fan (Alum) Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica Root) Jiang Huang (Curcuma Longa Rhizome) Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis) Gui Xin (Cinnamon Twig Heart) (equal parts)
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. During labor contractions, heat a plowshare iron (plowhead) until red-hot. Quench it in wine, mix with three qian of the medicine powder, and drink one or two cups; delivery will occur immediately. (This formula was sold by Doctor Qiao of Hechi County, Fengzhou, costing one qianyin per dose. It was secretly obtained by my scholar friend Yang Jibo and has proven effective every time.)
Powder the Ru Xiang (Frankincense Resin) finely. Form pills using pig heart blood, sized like Sophora japonica seeds. Coat with Zhu Sha (Cinnabar). Dry in the sun. Take one pill per dose. To induce labor, dissolve in cold wine. If delivery does not occur after some time, take another pill. In cases of severe dystocia, use seven lotus leaf hearts/stems, add two zhan of water, decoct to one zhan, warm slightly, and dissolve one pill. If delivery does not occur after some time, another pill may be taken. This medicine is miraculously effective; there is no case of failure. If the amniotic sac ruptures first, with excessive lochia fluid and a dry fetus unable to lie down, first administer Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) and Tongzhen Wan (Tongzhen Pill) to nourish qi and blood. Then, decoct green onion soup strongly, cool it to body temperature, and have the midwife wash the vaginal opening carefully to ensure smooth qi flow up and down. Apply a paste of butter and Hua Shi (Talcum Powder) to the vaginal opening internally. Then take the aforementioned labor-inducing medicine for complete safety. If the dead fetus fails to deliver, use three he of black soybeans and half a sheng of good vinegar. Boil until the beans are soft, extract one zhan of juice, warm it, and dissolve a pill. Delivery will occur shortly. If it does not occur, another dose may be taken. If the fetus is delivered but the placenta remains, taking this medicine will also facilitate its expulsion. If the fetus is in a transverse or abnormal position, first take Rushen San (Miraculous Powder) (formula seen previously), then take this medicine, and continue using this medicine to induce labor. When preparing the medicine, it is best to do so at noon on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, or on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, or on the third day of the third lunar month, or on a Chen day (7-9 AM) at the beginning of the month.
