Postpartum alternating chills and fever, heart pain, and amenorrhea. How to treat? Answer: This is caused by retained blood rushing to the Heart, causing pain circling the umbilicus and abdomen, with a sallow complexion. Even if temporary relief is achieved, symptoms will recur within two or three days. Taking *Hei Shen San* (Black Divine Powder) from *Ju Fang* yields significant results.
Formula for treating postpartum alternating chills and fever, whole-body warmth and heat, and chest/heart vexation and stifling sensation.
Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 3 liang)
Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix)
Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) [each 2 liang]

Chop the above five herbs. Decoct in 5 sheng of water until 2.5 sheng remain. Divide into three doses. Another version excludes Guixin and adds Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix).
Commentary: Guo Qizhong stated that postpartum alternating chills and fever are mostly caused by retained blood or disharmony of Yin and Yang. Treating it as malaria would be a mistake. Chen Wuyue commented that it can only be said that retained blood flows along the meridians; blocking the Yang channels causes heat, while blocking the Yin channels causes cold. The disease subsides when Qi/Blood harmonizes with Wei Qi. However, this explanation is not entirely sufficient. There are also cases of malaria contracted before childbirth that persist after childbirth, which are difficult to treat. Herbs such as Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Changshan (Dichroae Radix), and Xin Pi (Realgar) must absolutely not be used. Currently, *Caoguo Yinzi* (Tsaoko Drink) and *Sheng Shu Yinzi* (Raw and Cooked Drink) from *Jing Xiao Fang* are effective and available for reference. Also, *Si Shou Yin* (Four Beasts Drink) from *Yi Jian Fang* can be used. (Supplemented by Nan De)
