Treats postpartum edema (swelling due to deficiency), panting, and shortness of breath; the condition resolves with diuresis.
Shengjiang (Radix Zingiberis Recens, 3 liang, juice extracted) Baomian (White Wheat Flour, 3 liang) Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, 7 pieces)
Mix the flour with ginger juice to wrap the Banxia, forming seven cakes. Roast until scorched and cooked, then grind into powder. Take one cup mixed with water; effectiveness is indicated by smooth urination.
Da Tiaojing San (Great Menstrual Regulation Powder) is most effective for treating postpartum swelling and fullness, panting, urgency, irritability, thirst, and dysuria. (Formula see Volume 21, Treatise 3)
Furthermore, it is stated: Postpartum labor damages Qi and Blood, causing the Couli (pores and interstitial spaces) to become deficient, allowing Wind pathogenic factors to invade. When pathogens contend with Qi in the Qi level, preventing its free diffusion, it results in deficient edema that is light and floating. This is because pathogens contend with Qi, constituting Qi edema. If the skin resembles a ripe plum, it transforms into Water edema. Qi edema resolves with sweating; Water edema resolves with diuresis.
Han Fangji San (Han Fangji Powder) treats postpartum Wind-deficiency, where Qi stagnation attacks upward, causing swelling of the head and face.
Hanfangji (Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae) Zhuling (Polyporus, 1 liang each) Zhike (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus) Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis, 1 liang each) Shanglu (Radix Phytolaccae) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 3 fen each)
Grind into coarse powder. Each dose is 4 qian. Decoct with 1.5 cups of water and 3 slices of ginger until reduced to 0.7 cup. Strain and take warm on an empty stomach.

Ganxi (Resina Taxilli) Damai (Hordeum Vulgare, equal parts)
Grind each into fine powder. Layer barley and Ganxi alternately in a new clay pot until full. Seal with salt mud, calcine over fire until red-hot, cool down, and grind into powder. For any postpartum disorder, take 2 qian mixed with hot wine.
Treats postpartum Blood deficiency, Wind edema, and Water edema.
Zelan Ye (Herba Lycopi) Fangji (Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae, equal parts)
Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with warm wine. Those unable to drink alcohol may use vinegar soup instead.
It is discussed: Why do abdominal pain and diarrhea/dysentery occur postpartum? The answer is: Postpartum Spleen and Stomach are weak and timid, making them susceptible to Cold pathogenic invasion. If, within the first month, one exposes oneself to cold or wind, the Cold pathogen invades via the deficiency, lodges in the Huangmo (membranous tissue between heart and diaphragm), and scatters to the abdomen and hypochondrium. Thus, abdominal pain occurs paroxysmally, feeling like stabbing with awls or knives. If it flows into the Large Intestine, food and fluids are not digested, leading to profuse diarrhea, borborygmus, passage of red and white mucus, hypochondriac distension, or wandering pain. In such cases, urgently administer Tiaozhong Tang for immediate relief. If physicians mistakenly treat it as accumulation and use purgatives, disaster will follow swiftly. Be cautious, be cautious.
