Whenever there is headache, fever, pain in the limbs and joints, constipation, or vomiting with weakness of the feet, it is Xianggangjiao (Hong Kong Foot / Beriberi). For mild cases, Xiangsu San (Perilla and Bupleurum Powder) with added Mugua (Chaenomeles Fruit), Binglang (Areca Seed), and Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) can be decocted and taken orally, followed by treatment according to the specific syndrome. It should be known that for those suffering from Xianggangjiao, the condition always starts from the feet. Some present initially with flaccidity, weakness, pain, and numbness; some suddenly collapse while walking; some have swollen and full lower legs; some have withered and thin foot and knee muscles; some experience palpitations; some have insensitivity in the lower abdomen (skin is stiff and numb, unaware of sensation); some suffer from generalized muscle spasms; some vomit upon seeing food and dislike the smell of food; some have chest fullness and shortness of breath; some have body-wide soreness and pain. All these are signs of Xianggangjiao (the word "or" indicates that symptoms may or may not be present). This corresponds to what the Yellow Emperor called Huanfeng Shibì (Flaccid Wind-Damp Bi Syndrome). Flaccidity and weakness are termed Huanfeng (Flaccid Wind), and pain is termed Shibì (Damp Bi). When cold pathogen invades the Three Yang meridians, the disease will necessarily be cold in nature, treated primarily with Xiao Xuming Tang (Minor Xu-Ming Decoction) (adding fresh ginger juice after decoction yields the fastest effect). When summer-heat pathogen invades the Three Yin meridians, the disease will necessarily be hot in nature, treated primarily with Xiao Xuming Tang minus Fuzi (Aconite Lateralis Radix Preparata) and with Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) reduced by half. For severe restlessness, Zixue (Purple Snow) is the best remedy. If Zixue is unavailable, a self-prepared Mint decoction mixed with cold water is extremely effective. For constipation, Piyue Wan (Splee-Restriction Pill), Maren Wan (Hemp Seed Pill), or Sanhe San (Three-Harmony Powder) are indicated. (These formulas are all found in *Heji Jufang*). Acupuncture and moxibustion are still preferred. Taking tonifying medicines and washing the affected parts with herbal decoctions are both major taboos in medicine.
*Shenghui Fang* Discussion on Women's Xianggangjiao:
Women's Xianggangjiao differs from men's. Men suffer because their Kidney essence is weak, allowing Wind-Damp to invade; women suffer because their Baoluo (Uterine Collaterals) qi is deficient, allowing Wind-Toxin to bind. This is because the Baoluo belongs to the Kidney, and the Kidney governs the waist and feet. Furthermore, the meridians of the Liver, Spleen, and Kidney originate at the ten toes of the feet. If the Zang-Fu organs are deficient and damaged, Wind pathogen first resides in the feet, moving upward disturbing the Qi, hence named Xianggangjiao. These conditions arise from physical deficiency, exposure to wind while cooling off, prolonged sitting in damp and low places, postpartum overexertion, anger injuring the Liver, stagnation of Heart Qi, leading to amenorrhea. Due to deficiency and injury, Wind-Toxin binds to the skin and bones, causing skin insensitivity, tendon and bone pulling pain, inability to move freely due to Five Flaccidities, and spasms due to Six Tensions. Some immediately feel cold pain, some immediately swell, some have numb and weak feet, some have generalized spasms, dizziness, irritability, vomiting upon seeing food, mental confusion, vexatious pain in limbs and joints, dark yellow urine, and constipation. All these are its manifestations. The reason for treating women's Xianggangjiao differently from men's lies in their irregular Qi and Blood, as well as differences regarding pregnancy, difficult labor, and metrorrhagia trauma. Thus, Chu Cheng's treatments for widows, nuns, and wives' female relatives differed, which illustrates this principle. (Any woman suffering from Xianggangjiao disease will definitely be unable to bear children.)
