Regarding heart and abdominal pain during pregnancy, it may be due to pre-existing cold accumulation; or it may result from recent exposure to wind-cold. All arise from deficiency of the zang organs leading to onset. When pathogenic factors and healthy qi clash and move upward and downward with the qi mechanism, striking the heart, it causes heart pain; if attacking downward to the abdomen, it causes abdominal pain, thus resulting in heart and abdominal pain. During pregnancy, pain is caused by the mutual attack of pathogenic and healthy qi within. If not treated promptly, the pain impacts the Bao Luo (uterine collaterals), inevitably disturbing the fetus, and in severe cases, causing miscarriage. It is also said that heart and abdominal pain during pregnancy is mostly due to wind-cold-damp-cold, phlegm-fluids clashing with zang qi, thus causing abdominal pain. Continuous pathological impact leads to fetal movement.

It can dispel wind and tonify fatigue, nourish true yang, retreat pathogenic heat, soothe the middle, stabilize and harmonize the spirit, moisten and luster the complexion, and disperse pathogenic cold, plague miasma, and seasonal epidemic qi. Anqi Xiansheng (Master Anqi) bestowed this long-term medicinal herb on Li Shaojun. Later, Zhang Zhongjing modified it to become a prescription for abdominal pain in pregnant women.
