Radix Rehmanniae Preparata (Shengdi Huang), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui), Folium Artemisiae Argyi (Ai Ye) (each 2 liang), Colla Corii Asini (Ejiao), Radix Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong) (each 3 liang).
Take the above herbs, add seven sheng of water, decoct to obtain two and a half sheng, divide into three doses. If abdominal pain is severe, add Radix Eucommiae (Duzhong) and Cortex Acanthopanacis Senticosi (Wujia Pi) each 3 liang. Another prescription omits Radix Rehmanniae Preparata but includes Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gancao). Another prescription omits Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, instead using one spoonful of fresh juice of Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (Shengjiang), half he of juice of Radix Rehmanniae (Dihuang), and half he of Ma Tong (horse manure juice); decoct the medicine, strain, add these juices, boil for three more boils, and take warm. Another prescription contains Radix Ginseng (Renshen) and Poria (Fuling), decoct with water.
Treats damage to the fetus and pain caused by accidental falls during pregnancy.
Green bamboo shavings (Qingzhuru) (2 he), good wine (1 sheng), boil for three to five times, divide into three doses; peace will be restored.
Treats fetal restlessness and umbilical/abdominal pain due to stumbling or falling during pregnancy. Qin Jiao Tang. (From obstetrics texts, formula seen previously.)
Treats fetal restlessness and unbearable pain due to accidental injury during pregnancy. Also highly effective for metrorrhagia (Beng Lou). Also treats Zi Mao (also known as Zi Xian/eclampsia). Suo Sha Tang.
Suo Sha (Amomi Fructus) (as needed), stir-fry with peel until black.
Another version uses the kernel, lightly stir-fry in an ironing pan, grind into fine powder, mix with hot wine and take 2 qian. For those who do not drink alcohol, mixing with rice water is also acceptable. Feeling heat in the abdomen indicates the fetus has settled. This formula is extremely effective. Wen Juju said: The divine efficacy cannot be fully described. I have found it effective.
If pregnancy is nurtured properly, Qi and Blood will harmonize. Thus, the fetus remains safe in the womb, and delivery is easy. If daily life regulation is improper, Qi and Blood become disordered, causing the fetus to move urgently in the womb, making delivery difficult later. "Fetal Qi pressing on the heart" occurs because of excessive exertion during difficult labor, causing fetal movement and rebellious Qi, where fetal Qi rushes upward to press against the heart. Whenever fetal Qi presses on the heart, it causes fainting and suffocation; only when the Qi descends does consciousness return, and in severe cases, death may occur.
Treats disharmony of fetal Qi during pregnancy, where fetal Qi presses upward causing distension and pain, known as "Zi Xuan" (Hanging Fetus). Also treats fright and Qi stagnation at term preventing delivery for days. Named Qibao San (without Chuanxiong).
Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui) (3 fen), Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gancao) (1 fen), Fructus Averrhoae Belimbi (Dafupi), Radix Ginseng (Renshen), Radix Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong), Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (Chenpi), Radix Paeoniae Alba (Baishao) (each 0.5 liang), Folium Perillae (Zisu) (1 liang).
Cut the herbs finely. Take 0.5 liang per dose. Add one and a half sheng of water, four slices of Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (Shengjiang), and seven cun of Scallion White (Congbai). Decoct to seven parts, strain, and take warm on an empty stomach.
Once, a woman failed to deliver after multiple attempts, and parturition-inducing medicines were ineffective. Academician Xu said: This must be due to sitting on the birth mat too early, with a trace of fear Qi knotting inside and failing to move; this is not a matter of smooth or difficult delivery. *Suwen* states: Fear causes Qi to sink. Generally, fear causes Essence to retreat; when Essence retreats, the Upper Jiao closes; when closed, Qi returns; when Qi returns, the Lower Jiao becomes distended, and Qi fails to move. One dose of this medicine resulted in delivery. Regarding women experiencing Zi Xuan at six or seven months of pregnancy, I have used this formula frequently with success; within ten doses, the fetus descends. The formula originates from *Ben Shi Fang*.
In June of the Dingwei year, Lady Huang, wife of Luo Xin'en, was seven months pregnant and returned from a long journey. Suddenly, fetal Qi rushed up to the heart causing pain, making her unable to lie down or sit comfortably. Two physicians treated her without effect, claiming the fetus had died. They prepared to apply a paste of peeled and ground Ricinus Communis seeds (Bomazi) mixed with Moschus (Shexiang) to the navel to induce expulsion, putting her life in critical danger. I was summoned to examine her. The Chi pulses at both wrists were deep and absent, while other pulses were peaceful. I asked the two physicians: "What syndrome are you treating?" They replied: "Dead fetus." I asked: "How do you know?" They answered: "Because the Chi pulses are absent." I asked: "Which classic text supports this theory?" The two physicians had no answer. Then they asked me: "What syndrome are you treating?" I replied: "This is Zi Xuan. If it were a dead fetus, there would be distinguishing signs. Red face and blue tongue indicate dead fetus and living mother; blue face, blue tongue, and foaming mouth indicate dead mother and living fetus; blue lips and mouth indicate both mother and fetus dead. These are the verification signs. Now, her face is not red, and her tongue is not blue, so the fetus is alive. Her symptoms of unrest and pain rushing to the heart indicate fetal Qi pressing on the heart, called Zi Xuan. She should be treated with Zisu Yinzi. After ten doses, the fetus descended."
