In the autumn of the Wuwu year, there was a woman in the capital suffering from deficiency-type stagnation in the Middle Jiao, abdominal and hypochondriac distending pain, and constipation. Her six pulses were weak. After consulting several physicians without effect, I administered this prescription, and she recovered before finishing one dose.
Abdominal distension and fullness in women arises from long-standing cold in the Zang-Fu organs, deficiency and damage to Qi and Blood, allowing pathogenic factors to lodge and invade the Heart and Spleen. This involves the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian; when the Spleen is deficient, distension occurs. It also involves the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian, which originates below the little toe, slants toward the sole, enters the heel, ascends along the posterior medial aspect of the thigh, penetrates the Kidney, and connects with the Bladder. From the Kidney, it ascends through the Liver and Diaphragm, enters the Lung. Its branch emerges from the Lung and connects with the Heart. When the Zang organs are deficient, pathogenic factors lodge in these three meridians, battling with healthy Qi and accumulating internally. Qi converges on the Spleen; Spleen deficiency leads to distension, causing vexation and fullness in the Heart and Abdomen. If the pulse is slow and slippery upon diagnosis, it indicates distension and fullness.
