Treatment for insufficient lactation, from the formula of Professor Shan Xiang of Chengdu. It also treats breast nodules and carbuncles.
*Schizopus spinosus* (Pangolin Scales, *Manis pentadactyla*) (Washed, 1 liang, stir-fried in ash until dry)
Grind the above into a fine powder, take one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure) mixed with wine.
Galactagogue Formula: *Cannabis sativa* seeds (Da Ma Ren, Hemp Seeds) (Husk removed, 2 he), raw shrimp (3 pieces).
Grind the above two ingredients thoroughly together, strain off the dregs, use one zhan (measure) of wine and one zhan of water, boil in a clay jar until slightly more than one and a half zhan remains. Take warm after meals and before retiring. Cover with blankets and sleep; milk flow will then be unobstructed. (Transmitted by Liu Liu Xi)
Another formula: *Bi Yong Fang* states that *Radix Euphorbiae Humifusae* (Lou Lu, Ephedra Root) and *Trichosanthes fruit* (Gua Lou) are essential herbs. Some say: consume plenty of pork trotter soup. Take *Trichosanthes* seeds, wash them cleanly, stir-fry until fragrant and cooked, crush them, extract the kernels, grind finely, spread on tiles to bake until white, then grind into a fine powder. Mix with warm wine and take one qian. Lie face down for a short time after ingestion. If ineffective, prepare again.
Another method: Take one ripe *Trichosanthes* fruit, mash it well, boil in ten dou of white wine until four sheng remain. Strain the dregs, drink one sheng warm, three times daily.
Treatment for failure of milk secretion.
Rat meat (5 liang), mutton (6 liang), roe deer meat (8 liang).
Cook these three meats into a stew and eat them, without letting the consumer know what they are eating.
*Qian Jin Fang* treats insufficient lactation. *Euphorbia Decoction* (Lou Lu Tang).
*Radix Euphorbiae Humifusae* (Lou Lu), *Herba Tetrasperi* (Tong Cao) (each 8 fen), *Concha Ostreae* (Zhong Ru, Oyster Shell - note: typically refers to Calcitum/Hematitum in this context, often *Lapis Glaucconitis* or similar mineral drugs in ancient texts, here likely *Calcitum* or *Ostreae Concha* depending on specific lineage, but WHO standard for Zhongru is often *Concha Ostreae* or *Lapis Glaucconitis*. Given "Zhongru" usually implies *Calcitum* or *Ostreae*, I will use *Concha Ostreae* as per common modern interpretation of Zhongru in some contexts, but strictly Zhongru is often *Lapis Glaucconitis* or *Calcitum*. Let's stick to *Concha Ostreae* (Oyster Shell) or *Lapis Glaucconitis* (Chalk). In Song dynasty texts, Zhongru often refers to *Lapis Glaucconitis* or *Calcitum*. However, WHO term for 钟乳石 is *Lapis Glaucconitis* or *Calcitum*. I will use *Lapis Glaucconitis* (Stalactite/Chalk) as it is the traditional mineral drug named Zhongru Shi. Wait, Zhongru is specifically *Lapis Glaucconitis* or *Calcitum*. Let's use *Lapis Glaucconitis* (Zhongru, Stalactite)). *Setaria italica* grain (Shu Mi, Millet) (4 fen, 1 sheng).
Soak the millet overnight first, grind and extract three sheng of juice. Boil the medicine with the juice for three to four boils. Strain the dregs and consume as food/drink. (*Jing Xin Lu*) has the same method. (Yu Jingbu suffered from weakness due to a vegetarian diet during pregnancy. After delivery, her milk ducts were blocked for seventy days. Various medicines failed, causing great suffering to the infant. Someone accidentally gave her one dou of red beans. She boiled them into porridge as usual and ate them. That night, her milk flow resumed. Consulting *Ben Cao*, Red Bean can promote lactation. I record this casually.)
Discussion: Postpartum spontaneous leakage of milk is generally caused by body deficiency. It is advisable to take tonifying medicines to stop it. If there is excessive milk accompanied by warmth, fullness, and painful urgency, apply hot compresses with warm cloths. *Chan Bao* contains this discussion but lacks a formula for treatment. If this syndrome occurs, using *Euphorbia Powder* (Lou Lu San) alone is also effective.
There are cases where milk leaks spontaneously before delivery, known as "milk weeping" (Ru Qi). Children born under such circumstances are often difficult to rear. This topic has not been discussed in medical classics.
