Treats postpartum *rulao* (chronic deficiency syndrome after childbirth due to improper care), manifesting as sallow and emaciated skin, lack of luster in the face; or aversion to cold with high fever, soreness and pain in the four limbs, irritability, and headache. Use Huang Bie Jia Zhu San (Yellow Turtle Shell Decoction).
Huang Bie Jia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis, prepared with vinegar, each 1 liang) Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, stir-fried) Sangjisheng (Ramulus Taxilli) Baifuling (Poria) Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) Renshen (Radix Ginseng) Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) Maimendong (Rhizoma Ophiopogonis, heart removed) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, each 0.5 liang) Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae, 3 qian)
Grind the above herbs into a fine powder. For each dose, take 5 qian of the powder, paired with one pair of pig kidneys (*zhushizi*), removing the fatty membrane. First, add one *zhan* of water, half a *fen* of ginger, and three jujubes, decoct until the liquid reduces to seven-tenths. Strain out the dregs, retain the liquid and the kidneys, then add 5 qian of the herbal powder, and continue decocting until the liquid reduces to four-tenths. Strain out the dregs. Take warm on an empty stomach and before evening meal. The two sets of dregs are combined for decoction.
The *Chanbao* (Precious Prescriptions for Childbirth) states: Postpartum weakness and emaciation result from damage to the zang-fu organs during childbirth and depletion of qi and blood. In mild cases, adequate recuperation for a full month leads to recovery; in severe cases, even after a full month, qi and blood remain unharmonized, resulting in weakness and emaciation. When qi and blood are exhausted postpartum and the zang-fu are overtaxed, if the woman is young and vigorous and can observe dietary and lifestyle restrictions during recuperation, she will recover by the end of the first month. However, postpartum qi and blood are often weak; even after passing the customary period, fatigue persists. This may be due to irregular diet and improper care, allowing wind-cold pathogenic factors to invade, contend with qi and blood, and flow into the five zang and six fu organs. This causes the skin and muscles to lose nourishment and the complexion to become withered, hence termed "xu lei" (deficiency emaciation).
Treats postpartum deficiency emaciation, weakness of the spleen and stomach, powerless four limbs, complete loss of appetite, and abdominal distension and fullness. Use Renshen San (Ginseng Powder).
Huangqi (Radix Astragali) Renshen (Radix Ginseng) Caoguoren (Semen Tsaoko) Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis) Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, each 1 liang) Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) Baifuling (Poria) Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae) Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, each 0.5 liang) Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) Liangjiang (Rhizoma Alpiniae Officinarum) Helilepi (Endocarpus Terminaliae Chebulae, each 3 qian)
Cut the herbs into small pieces. For each dose, take 4 qian. Add one *zhan* of water, three slices of ginger, and one jujube, decoct until the liquid reduces to six-tenths. Strain out the dregs. Take warm at any time.
Treats postpartum deficiency emaciation, shortness of breath, and inability to eat. Use Shu Gan Dihuang Tang (Prepared Rehmannia Root Decoction).
Shu Gan Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, 2 liang) Renshen (Radix Ginseng) Bei Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis) Shihu (Caulis Dendrobii) Baifuling (Poria) Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) Luanjiao (Colla Cornus Cervi) Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, each 1 liang) Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) Zelan Ye (Herba Lycopi) Huangqi (Radix Astragali) Xuduan (Radix Dipsaci, each 3 qian)
