Treats restlessness (Zi Fan) during pregnancy, characterized by dry mouth and inability to sleep. Use Huanglian Tang (Coptis Decoction).
Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) (remove rootlets)
Grind into fine powder. Take one qian per dose, mixed with thin porridge water. Jiuzheng Huanglian Wan (Wine-steamed Coptis Pills) is also effective.
Treats persistent mental restlessness and heat sensation during pregnancy.
Congbai (Scallion White) (one handful)
Chishi (Fermented Soybean) (two he)
Boil the above two ingredients in two large zhan of water until reduced to one and a half zhan. Strain the dregs. Divide into three doses and take warm.
Treats fetal instability caused by medication, presenting as symptoms similar to deficiency-type restlessness and insomnia, which Chao Yuanfang termed Zi Fan (Fetal Restlessness).
Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) (one liang, wash, bake-dry)
Grind into fine powder. Form pills using jujube flesh, sized like quail eggs. Take one pill per dose, chew thoroughly, and swallow with Ginseng decoction.
Later physicians who failed to recognize this condition treated it as general deficiency restlessness, inevitably damaging the fetal qi. Even knowledgeable physicians often merely observed the presence of herbs without understanding the pathology. This view comes from Zheng Zongwen, an obstetrician, citing Chen Cangqi's *Bencao Shiyi* (Supplement to Materia Medica). It yields excellent results. (See formula in *Chanru* chapter).
The Foot-Taiyin channel belongs to the Spleen, and its qi connects to the mouth. The Hand-Shaoyin channel belongs to the Heart, and its qi connects to the tongue. In pregnant women, if the qi of the zang-fu organs is deficient, and Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) qi are disordered, with Yin and Yang separated, pathogenic heat attacks the Heart and Spleen. This causes a scarcity of body fluids, leading to mental restlessness and dry mouth. I examine this condition; it is largely similar to Zi Fan, so the formulas used for Zi Fan can be generally applied here. Yimu Wan (Motherwort Pills) is also effective.
Treats excessive internal heat during pregnancy causing mental restlessness, irritability, dry mouth, and thirst with counterflow.
