Chao Yuanfang stated: These two conditions are caused by wind-toxin qi invading the throat and pharynx, where it clashes with blood and qi, resulting in swelling and toxin formation. If heat enters the heart, it leads to restlessness, inability to eat, and death. In such urgent cases, Jin Xing Wan (Golden Star Pill) must be used immediately to purge and detoxify. For treating pediatric throat and cheek swelling and pain, herbs such as Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Mayaxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Pengsha (Borax), and Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) should be used. Lianqiao Tang (Forsythia Decoction) is indispensable, and Lianqiao Lulu Tang (Forsythia and Euphorbiae Radix Decoction) may also be administered.

Chao Yuanfang stated: Children who cannot speak at four or five years of age do so because the heart governs speech among the five zang organs. The inability to speak arises because during gestation, the mother suddenly experienced fright or terror, which internally disturbed the fetus's organs. Evil qi invaded the heart, causing deficiency of heart qi and resulting in an inability to speak. It is appropriate to administer Qian Shi's Changpu Wan (Acorus Pill) with modifications as needed, taking it over a long period to achieve efficacy.
Changpu Wan (Acorus Pill) treats pediatric deficiency of heart qi, leading to an inability to speak at five or six years of age. Since the heart governs speech, delayed language development in slightly older children is due to the mother experiencing fright during pregnancy, which internally disturbed the fetus's organs. Evil qi invaded the heart, causing deficiency of heart qi and weakness of the tongue base, thus resulting in delayed speech.
