当以故絮着衣,勿加新绵,天气和暖之时,抱出日中嬉戏,数见风日,则血凝气刚,肌肉硬密,可耐风寒,不致疾病;

应当用旧棉絮做衣服,不要加新绵,在天气和暖的时候,抱到太阳下嬉戏,多次见到风日,则血液凝练、气机刚强,肌肉坚实致密,能够耐受风寒,不会导致疾病;

Chao Yuanfang stated: When an infant is just born, the skin and flesh are not yet solid; it is inadvisable to dress them in overly warm clothing, as excessive warmth may cause the sinews and bones to become lax and weak. It is advisable to frequently expose them to wind and sunlight. If they do not see wind or sunlight, their skin and flesh will become brittle and soft, making them prone to injury.
Clothing should be made from old cotton wadding rather than new cotton padding. During mild weather, the infant should be taken out into the sun to play. Frequent exposure to wind and sunlight will lead to condensed blood and robust qi, resulting in firm and dense muscles that can withstand wind and cold, thereby preventing disease.
If kept inside curtains with multiple layers of heavy, warm clothing, it is akin to plants growing in shady places—unexposed to wind and sunlight, becoming soft, brittle, and unable to endure wind and cold. One should dress the infant lightly, ensuring only the back remains warm. The practice of dressing lightly should begin in autumn.
One should not suddenly reduce clothing in spring or summer, otherwise, it may invite wind-cold invasion. The reason for starting in autumn is to gradually accustom the body to cooler temperatures, thus building cold tolerance. In winter, wearing two thin padded jackets and one lined skirt is sufficient to withstand the cold.
If one cannot bear to see the child feeling cold, a slight addition of clothing is permissible. However, over-warming out of affection is actually harmful. Care should also be taken to prevent sweating; if sweat occurs, the exterior becomes deficient, allowing wind pathogens to easily invade. This caution applies to both waking and sleeping states throughout day and night.
The method of breastfeeding and feeding should also be regulated; overfeeding must be avoided. If there is retained food stagnation that fails to digest, formulas such as Xiaoru Wan (Infant Digestion Pill) for resolving accumulation and warming the spleen should be used. Chen’s saying, “Endure three parts cold, eat seven parts full, frequently rub the abdomen, bathe less,” along with the principles of keeping the back, abdomen, and feet warm while keeping the head and chest cool, are excellent guidelines.
Xiaoru Wan (also known as Xiaoshi Wan) treats retained food stagnation. Chao Yuanfang stated: Retained food stagnation is due to coldness in the spleen and stomach. Infants who consume excessive raw or cold foods during breastfeeding accumulate cold qi in the spleen and stomach. The stomach is the sea of water and grain; the spleen grinds and digests it. When stomach qi is harmonious, breastfeeding and food digestion occur smoothly. A deep pulse indicates food injury and indigestion.
