The newborn infant is like a lump of blood, lacking distinct physical symptoms and discernible pulse. If convulsions occur, it must be recognized as fetal fright (Tai Jing); if fever occurs, it must be known to stem from maternal heat. Within the first three days, if holding and comforting fails to bring peace, ancient texts note that the seventh day and certain lunar dates are critical periods. Umbilical tetanus (Qi Feng), lockjaw (Cuo Kou), and other conditions can lead to death if mishandled; abdominal locking, visible blue veins, and pursed lips are also signs of critical illness. Diseases caused by external pathogenic factors or evil influences may result in refusal to nurse for a night and spontaneous loss of spirit; Xieshe Bingzi (Scorpion and Snake Pill) can ensure safety, and Hupo Baolong Wan (Amber Embracing Dragon Pill) may also be administered. If the condition is deemed incurable and deteriorates rapidly, blackening of the fingernails and lips indicates despair. Female infants born with bloody urine suffer from heat accumulated in the womb; male infants with eyes tightly shut or suffering from carbuncles and sores exhibit extreme heat. Both conditions are suitable for Huadu Dan (Detoxification Pill); if bleeding occurs, Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) should be decocted alone. Infants within one month producing phlegm and saliva in the mouth should be warmed with clothes near fire or added cotton. Unstable demeanor, strabismus, and opisthotonos are pitiable. Misidentifying fright-wind and using incorrect medications can be remedied with Liangxin Niuhuang San (Cool Heart Calomel Powder) for peace, a small amount of Lijing Dihuang Jian (Pulse-Relieving Rehmannia Decoction), and white honey, which is considered a miraculous remedy. Fright can be identified before one year of age; avoid loud noises to prevent disturbing the spirit. During the first month, half-year mark, and swaddling period, fright and heat must be carefully distinguished from Bian Zheng (Transformation and Steaming). Thirty-four days constitute one "Bian" (Transformation), and sixty-four days constitute one "Zheng" (Steaming). After eighteen cycles of Bian Zheng, the pulse naturally arises at the Cun Kou (Radial Artery). Observing the face during incomplete Bian Zheng: the left eye and temporal region belong to Yin Liver Wood; the brow ridge above and below also belong to Wood; the tip of the nose is the Central Palace governing Heart Earth. The ears belong to Kidney and often indicate deficiency; the sides of the lips are governed by Spleen; the cheekbones and cheeks belong to Heart Fire; only the philtrum belongs to Lung Metal. In the generation of the Five Elements, emphasis is placed on smooth generation; if there is mutual overcoming, skillful intervention is required. Following the sequence makes treatment easy, while reversing it makes cure difficult; lack of wisdom leads to coarse temperament. The Heart governs fright, the Lung governs Qi, the Liver governs Wind, and the Spleen governs taste. If the Stomach is not moist but cold and deficient, continuous vomiting and diarrhea will occur, leading to fright-wind. Since ancient times, it has been said that the Heart governs fright, yet all five Zang and six Fu organs can manifest fright. Heart fright causes blood dispersion and Qi failure, entering the meridians to generate myriad diseases. Lung meridian cough and wheezing, along with frequent vomiting, stem from Spleen-Stomach issues. Kidney manifests as grinding teeth, Liver as eye twitching, and night crying often fears red-faced heart heat. Heat in the five centers is the fault of the Spleen; pale green face and turning white indicate Gallbladder governs fright; if the San Jiao causes thirst, the pathogen enters the Bladder causing sounds in the testicles.
