Raising children requires careful regulation and protection; supervision must not be lax. Excessive breastfeeding ultimately damages the Stomach Qi, while food stagnation injures the Spleen. Thick quilts are not beneficial, whereas light clothing is appropriate. On windless days, frequent exposure to sunlight is recommended, and changes in cold and heat should follow the natural seasons.
First, keep the back warm. The classics state: Between the third and sixth vertebrae of the spine, on both sides, lie the Feishu (BL13) acupoints. If wind pathogens invade the Feishu points, it causes the body hair to stand erect and the skin pores to close, leading to disease. Symptoms may include coughing, expectoration, wheezing, dry heaving or vomiting, chest fullness, aversion to cold, and high fever; all these result from cold invading the Feishu points. Therefore, it is said that the back should be kept warm.
Second, keep the abdomen warm. Folk wisdom says: The abdomen must not lack warmth; "abdomen" refers to the Stomach. The Stomach is the sea of water and grain; if cold, food cannot rot and transform, leading to borborygmus, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and other ailments. The classics state: When the Stomach is hot, it digests food quickly and causes hunger, enabling normal eating. Therefore, it is said that the abdomen should be kept warm.
Third, keep the feet warm. The classics state: The Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian governs the meridians of the Stomach, hence the saying "cold rises from below." Therefore, it is said that the feet should be kept warm.
Fourth, keep the head cool. The classics state: The head is the convergence of the six Yang meridians, where all Yang Qi gathers. The brain is the sea of marrow; if overheated, it leads to excessive sweating due to marrow overflow, bulging fontanelle, delayed closure of the fontanelle (craniotabes), scalp sores, or eye diseases. Therefore, it is said that the head should not be overheated but kept cool. Thus, it is said that the head should be cool.
Fifth, keep the chest and heart area cool. The Heart belongs to Bing Fire. If external pathogenic heat invades and internal Heart Fire connects with it, both interior and exterior become hot. Mild symptoms include dry mouth, dry tongue, and red cheeks; severe symptoms include crying, fright, and convulsions. Therefore, the chest and heart area should be kept cool.
The physiognomy of a long-lived child is naturally evident in their posture. The nose is dry without rhinorrhea, and there is no saliva in the throat. The hair is dyed dark like indigo, and the lips are fresh like vermilion paint. The face is square like flowers reflecting in bamboo, and the cheeks bloom like lotuses in water. They smile only when prompted, do not extend their hands unnecessarily at inappropriate times, cry little even when crying, and sleep briefly even when sleeping. Their mind is calm like still waves, and their nature is clear like the sky in a mirror. Such a child has much auspiciousness in their body; why worry about illness entangling them?
Soft body, flaccid genitals, and a skull with four depressed angles indicate short life. A small or protruding umbilicus with loose flesh indicates short life. Sparse, brittle hair and a short, weak cry indicate short life. Visible blue veins all over the body indicate short life. Swollen buttocks and malformed patellae, capable of squatting, walking, and standing but dying early, indicate short life. A deep umbilical fossa, black scrotum, and a dignified, self-possessed character indicate this is a child who will live a long life.
