(Attached: Yellow Disease)
The manifestations of jaundice are categorized into five types in the *Neijing* (Classic of Internal Medicine): first, Huanghan (Yellow Sweat); second, Huangdan (Jaundice); third, Gudanz (Grain Jaundice); fourth, Jiudan (Wine Jaundice); and fifth, Nulaodan (Female Labor Jaundice). All these conditions arise from internal steaming caused by damp-heat. It is analogous to making soybean paste; when dampness and heat interact and stagnate, yellow coloration is produced. The symptoms of jaundice in children are similar to those in adults, but the etiology differs. They are all caused by excessive damage to the Spleen and Stomach due to dietary irregularities, leading to steaming and薰蒸 (fuming/steaming) of damp-heat, which generates jaundice. The clinical presentation involves yellowing of the face, eyes, and body, along with yellow urine. These symptoms can present as deficiency (Xu), excess (Shi), cold (Han), or heat (Re). Treatment should be adjusted according to the specific syndrome. Another condition exists where appetite remains normal, muscle growth fails, the entire body turns yellow, and the patient craves non-food items such as soil, cloth wadding, tea leaves, or charcoal. This is caused by intestinal parasites and is called "Huangbing" (Yellow Disease), commonly known in modern vernacular as "Huangpang Bing" (Yellow Puffiness Disease). There is a separate formula for treating Huangbing, which should not be treated as Dan (Jaundice). Additionally, yellowing accompanied by anhidrosis in Yangming disease of Cold Damage is a case of Blood Accumulation (Xuzheng) and should be treated according to Cold Damage protocols. Cases presenting with a floating pulse, slippery stool, urine turbid like dregs, sweat that stains clothes yellow, and a darkened complexion are difficult to treat.
