Madam Wu, conferred the title of "Guofeng" (Honored Lady), was the mother of Chejia Yonglan. She was over sixty years old and had suffered from leukorrhea for a long time. After multiple ineffective treatments, her condition worsened into white beng (profuse discharge of white material). I was then consulted to treat her. The pulse diagnosis revealed: the right Cun position was slippery; the left Cun position was short and weak; both Guan positions were soggy (ru); and both Chi positions were soft and weak. I said, "Based on the pulse, both the Heart and Kidney are deficient, and there is dampness in the Middle Jiao." The *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) states: "Beng lou lasting for a long time turns into leukorrhea; prolonged leakage causes the bones and sinews to wither." Now, since excessive white discharge has occurred, Qi and Blood are deteriorating daily. The treatment method should be to dry Spleen dampness and simultaneously tonify the Heart and Kidney. Using *Jiji Dan* to tonify the Heart and Kidney, and *Duanxia Wan* to dry the dampness in the Middle Palace (Spleen and Stomach), would ensure complete recovery. Indeed, she recovered before finishing one dose.
Formula for *Jiji Dan*: Lu Jiao Shuang (Deer Horn Frost), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis), Bai Fu Ling (Poria) each 2 liang; Shi Chang Pu (Acorus Tatarinowii), Yuan Zhi (Polygala) each 1.5 liang; Long Gu (Fossilized Bones), Bai Shi Zhi (Halloysitum Rubrum) each 1 liang; Yi Zhi Ren (Alpinia Oxyphylla) 5 qian. Made into pills using dried Shan Yao (Dioscorea) paste as a binder, sized like paulownia seeds. Take 70-80 pills with warm water on an empty stomach.
Formula for *Duanxia Wan*: Tou Er Can Sha (Mulberry Silkworm Feces, stir-fried) 3 liang; Huang Jing Zi (Vitex Negundo Fruit, stir-fried) 2 liang; Hai Piao Xiao (Cuttlefish Bone, scraped clean of black shell); Chu Gen Bai Pi (Celastrus Root Bark) each 1 liang. Made into pills using flour paste as a binder. Take 60 pills with warm water in the afternoon.
The wife of Wu Beihai, the Taixue Ling (Director of the Imperial College), experienced recurring lumps on her limbs before each menstruation. These lumps were red and purple, accompanied by distending pain. She had no appetite, and her epigastrium often hurt. Her menstrual period often arrived ahead of schedule. Her pulse was rapid and forceful in both hands. Correlating symptoms with the pulse, this indicated stagnant fire in the Liver and Spleen meridians. Generally, the Liver governs anger, and the Spleen governs overthinking. Excessive thinking and anger, if suppressed and not expressed, cause stagnation within. Thus, during menstruation, red and swollen lumps appear on the limbs. She was treated with Chai Hu (Bupleurum), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum), Xiang Fu (Cyperus), Wu Yao (Lindera), Bai Shao Yao (White Peony), Qing Pi (Citrus Aurantium Green Peel), Dan Shen (Salvia), Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis), Yu Jin (Curcuma), Jiu Chao Huang Lian (Stir-fried Coptis with wine), and Shan Zhi Zi (Gardenia). She recovered completely.
Zhou Chuyu, a guest of Scholar Wu, was bold and unconstrained. People said he had the demeanor of Jin Dynasty scholars. After drinking, he became even more licentious and fond of male companionship, which led to his suffering from white zhuo (white turbid discharge from the urethra). Local physicians tried treating him with *Buzhong Yiqi Tang* to lift Qi, *Liujun Di Huang Wan* to nourish Yin, *Wuling San* and *Liuyi San* to promote urination and drain dampness, methods to clear fire, and methods to warm and tonify. None were effective. He also indiscriminately took herbal remedies, resulting in emaciation like skin and bone, and knee weakness resembling Wei syndrome (flaccidity). He had been ill for many years. Through introduction to Scholar Wu Beihai, he visited me and earnestly requested treatment. His pulse at the right Cun and Guan positions was rapid. I said, "This is caused by lack of restraint after drinking. There is excessive dampness and phlegm in the Middle Jiao, which accumulates and transforms into heat, flowing downward. Hence, turbid matter flows out continuously, leading to chronic non-healing." I prescribed *Jiawei Duanben Wan*, after which his condition improved. Formula: Bai Luo Si Ke (White Snail Shell) 4 liang; Mu Li (Oyster Shell), Ku Shen (Sophora Flavescens), Ge Gen (Kudzu Root), Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark) each 2 liang; Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel), Ban Xia (Pinellia), Fu Ling (Poria) each 1 liang; Gan Cao (Licorice Root) 5 qian. Made into pills using flour paste. Take 3 qian with warm water morning and evening.
