Mrs. Zhou Jianquan suffered from Shanghan (Cold Damage). She presented with fever, delirium (speaking nonsense), thirst, cough, pain in the chest and diaphragm, diarrhea, vomiting, and macules covering the whole body. Upon palpation, her six pulses were surging and slippery. I stated: "This is a combined syndrome of Shaoyang and Yangming diseases, and the condition is also severe." Urgently, Shengma Gegen Tang (Ephedra and Pueraria Decoction) was prescribed with added Huashi (Talcum) and Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit). After taking the medicine, profuse sweating occurred, and by afternoon, the fever subsided, and the delirium ceased. In the evening, Chai Ling Tang (Bupleurum and Pinellia Decoction) with added Wuweizi and Huashi was administered; that night, the diarrhea stopped, and her mental clarity began to return. The next day, the left pulse had harmonized, and the right pulse had slightly converged. I rejoiced and said: "She will be unharmed." The prescription was changed to use Baishao Yao (White Peony Root) as the sovereign herb, combined with Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Jiu Qin (Wine-processed Scutellaria Root), Wuweizi, Muli (Oyster Shell), Huashi, Fuling (Poria), Zexie (Alisma Rhizome), and Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome). After four doses, she recovered.
Mr. Zang Guzhu, a Grand Master of State, suffered from itching in both ears, dry lips, dry tongue, cough with thick sputum. His left pulse was slightly floating and wiry, while the right pulse was surging and slippery. This indicated that phlegm-fire in the stomach had flowed into the Lung Meridian, stagnating for a long time and generating heat and wind. First, Zongguan Wan (Chief Commander Pill) was used to guide out the phanc, followed by Heihu Dan (Black Tiger Elixir) to dispel wind-heat. Subsequently, Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root), Bohe (Mint), Yujin (Curcuma Longa Rhizome), Gegen (Pueraria Lobata Root), Baiyaobi (Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome), Gancao (Licorice Root), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit), and Chantui (Cicada Slough) were decocted and taken, resulting in relief.
Wang Nangang suffered from coughing with Qi rushing upward, unable to rest his head on the pillow, with incessant expectoration. He had slight fever in the afternoon, distension and fullness in the chest and diaphragm, unaware of hunger or satiety, dry mouth, a thick white coating on the tongue, short scanty urine, tenesmus in defecation, and occasional passage of purple-black blood. The right Guan pulse was surging and slippery, while the left pulse was choppy. Based on the pulse and symptoms, there was blood stasis and phlegm accumulation in the stomach, and Lung Qi was also deficient. The method should be to tonify first and then purge. Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Baizhu, Baishao Yao, Chaihu, Huanglian, Chenpi, Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Wuweizi, and Jiegeng (Platycodon Root) were given for three doses. Observing that the Lung pulse had become robust, Zongguan Wan was administered to purge, expelling a large amount of black blood clots. All symptoms significantly decreased, and Hong Liushen Wan (Red Six Divine Pills) was subsequently used for regulation until recovery.
Mrs. Zhang Taojin originally suffered from Longbi (difficulty in urination). Three days after a miscarriage, she experienced pain below the umbilicus, night fever, thirst, loose stools occurring three to four times daily. Initially, Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with added Yuanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizome), Zelan Ye (Lysimachiae Herba), and Mudan Pi (Moutan Cortex) was administered. After three doses, the stool became solid. However, urinary frequency persisted, dripping continuously, more than twenty times a day and night, especially at night, with extreme mental fatigue. Although the pulse rate was five beats per respiration, it was not sufficiently filling to the finger. This indicated Blood deficiency with heat, and Qi stagnation. Damp-heat was in the Qi level, causing thirst; Blood deficiency caused pain below the umbilicus. The treatment method should be to vigorously tonify Yin and lightly leach out dampness to unblock Yang. Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) 3 qian and Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) 1 qian were used to tonify Yin as the sovereign herbs; Bibi (Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome) was used to remove damp-heat as the minister herbs; Qumai Sui (Agrostidis Spica) and Zexie were used for light leaching as the assistant herbs; Wuyao (Lindera Root) regulated Qi, and Gancao served as the envoy. After administration, the abdominal pain ceased completely, and nocturnal urination did not recur. After three consecutive doses, the illness was resolved abruptly.
