Wang Songgang’s wife suffered from pain in the left hypochondrium, accompanied by cough and internal heat. Each time she coughed, there was a pulling pain under the hypochondrium, and her sleep and appetite were significantly reduced. She was prescribed Qingpi (Cortex Aurantii), Xiangfu (Rhizoma Cyperi), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba or Rubra), Hezi (Fructus Terminaliae Chebulae), Shanzhizi (Fructus Gardeniae), Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae), Fuling (Poria), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Taoren (Semen Persicae), and Huashi (Talcum), decocted with Renshen (Radix Ginseng) in water. The internal heat subsided, and the pain decreased.
The mother-in-law of Wenxue Zanhuang suffered from severe pain in the left hypochondrium after childbirth, with cough and difficulty expectorating phlegm. Internal heat caused qi stagnation so severe that she could not lie flat. She was given Gualouren (Semen Benincasae), Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis), Zisuzi (Fructus Perillae), Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis), and Zhike (Fructus Aurantii), each one qian, decocted in water. After taking this, the qi stagnation settled, and the cough gradually subsided. Externally, Baohe Wan (Preservation of Harmony Pill) and Qizhi Huatan Wan (Seven-Processed Phlegm-Resolving Pill) were administered to restore health.
Xu Shaofeng had phlegm-dampness in the stomach, constrained fire in the Liver and Gallbladder meridians, and insufficient Heart blood. His complexion was dark and dry, he experienced joint pain, forgetfulness, mental confusion, and internal heat, showing signs of impending stroke. The pulse at the left Cun position was fine and rapid, Guan position wiry and rapid; the right Guan position was slippery upon heavy pressure, and both Chi positions were weak. The treatment aimed to clear the constrained fire of the Liver and Gallbladder while nourishing the Heart spirit, eliminate phlegm-fluids in the stomach, and generate Qi and Blood. This ensures that Spirit commands Qi, Qi commands Blood, allowing Qi and Blood to circulate freely without obstruction in the collaterals, thereby curing all diseases naturally. How could stroke occur? Shi Changpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Baifuling (Poria), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), Suanzaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae), Tianma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae), and Juhong (Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae) were used, each one liang; Niudan Nanting (Arisaema cum Bile Bulbus) two liang; Baijiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), and Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae) each five qian; Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) seven qian and five fen. These were processed into pills using Zhuru paste made from Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) mixed with Zhuli (Nodus Bambusae in Calamine) and Shengjiangzhi (Jucius Zingiberis Recens). The pills were sized like mung beans. Two qian were taken with tea soup after meals and at night, two to three times daily. After finishing the course, his spirit greatly improved, joints relaxed, complexion brightened, and hands and feet became light and agile; all symptoms resolved. Xu Shaofeng said, "I have rarely found medicine effective in my life, but I did not expect this prescription to be so miraculous. Not only did it benefit me, but all my relatives and friends with phlegm-fire also responded well."
A female relative of the Zhu family had menstruation lasting more than a month. Every dusk, she experienced chills followed by fever, body-wide pain at night, chest fullness and oppression, requiring loud shouting and screaming. She would probe her throat with her hand to vomit up phlegm-fluids before feeling relief. Currently, she was extremely thirsty. This was diagnosed as Phlegm-Fluid Malaria. Since she could not eat and hallucinated seeing ghosts at night, it was further identified as Re Ru Xue Shi (Heat Entering the Blood Chamber). Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) was added with Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Danpi (Cortex Moutan), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), and Taoren (Semen Persicae). After two doses, a second formula was prepared: Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) three qian, Heshouwu (Radix Polygoni Multiflori Preparata) two qian, Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) and Maiya (Fructus Hordei Germinatus) each one qian, Wumei (Fructus Mume) one piece, and Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) three slices, decocted in water. The chills and fever ceased, and all symptoms stabilized.
