Ms. Huang, wife of Huang Yizhai, had not yet reached one month postpartum when she engaged in sexual intercourse while intoxicated. This resulted in severe vaginal bleeding resembling a metrorrhagia (uterine bleeding), which was unstoppable. She presented with fever, dizziness, and sensations of heat in both urination and defecation. Her six pulses were surging and large (Hong Da). A prescription was administered containing Zhu Ru (Bamboo Shavings), Pu Huang (Pollen Typhae), Bai Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) each at 1 qian; Xiang Fu (Rhizoma Cyperi), Fu Ling (Poria), Ce Bai Ye (Cacumen Platycladi), and Qing Hao (Herba Artemisiae Annuae) each at 0.7 qian; Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Pao Jiang (Prepared Ginger Rhizome), and Ai Ye (Folium Artemisiae Argyi) each at 0.3 qian. After taking the medicine, the bleeding stopped by more than half, but she still experienced distending pain in the lower back. In the afternoon, she felt fullness and oppression in the chest and epigastrium. The prescription was modified to include Chuan Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) at 0.5 qian; Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Fu Ling (Poria), Po Gu Zhi (Fructus Psoraleae, also known as Bu Gu Zhi), Pu Huang (Pollen Typhae), and Xiang Fu (Rhizoma Cyperi) each at 0.8 qian; Jiang Tan (Charred Ginger Rhizome) and Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) each at 0.1 qian; Chen Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) at 0.7 qian; and Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) at 1 qian. After taking this formula, the bleeding ceased completely, and the lower back pain also resolved.
Brother Cheng Xinzhang presented with redness and swelling of the cheeks and jaw, nausea and vomiting, fever, inability to eat, irritability in the afternoon, bitter taste in the mouth, and insomnia at night. His six pulses were surging and large. This is commonly known as "Lu Ci Wen" (Ibis Plague). It is a syndrome involving the Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) and Yangming (Yang Brightness) meridians. The treatment method should be to clear heat and resolve the exterior. A prescription was used containing Chai Hu (Radix Bupleuri), Guan Zhong (Rhizoma Cibotii) each at 2 qian; Gan Ge (Radix Puerariae), Zhu Ru (Bamboo Shavings), Ban Xia Qu (Prepared Pinellia Tuber) each at 1 qian; Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Zhi Qiao (Fructus Aurantii) each at 0.7 qian; and Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) at 0.4 qian. After one dose, her condition improved by half. After further doses, the swelling subsided, appetite returned, and she slept peacefully.
A sixty-year-old Mr. Cheng, who originally suffered from wheezing and coughing, now presented with facial edema and generalized edema of the four limbs. He had loose stools, scanty urine, and frequent palpitations (Zheng Tong). This is a Phlegm-Fluid retention syndrome. It was treated primarily with Xuan Fu Hua Tang (Inula Flower Decoction) plus Sang Bai Pi (Cortex Mori Radicis) and Yi Yi Ren (Semen Coicis). The prescription consisted of Xuan Fu Hua (Flos Inulae), Sang Bai Pi (Cortex Mori Radicis) each at 1 qian; Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng), Ju Hong (Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae Rubrum), Fu Ling (Poria) each at 0.7 qian; Hou Po (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis) at 0.5 qian; Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) each at 0.3 qian; Yi Yi Ren (Semen Coicis) at 1.5 qian; and three slices of Sheng Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens). Decocted in water and taken orally. After one dose, the palpitations disappeared. After four doses, the wheezing and edema both subsided.
Mr. Cheng Qihu presented with fever and back pain, originating from excessive alcohol consumption. After three months of medical treatment, his symptoms worsened to include tenesmus (Li Ji Hou Zhong), passing sticky red and white purulent stool. There was a mass in the Zhong Wan (Epigastrium), extending rigidly from the Ji Wei bone down to the umbilicus, shaped like a horizontal beam. Urine was scanty and difficult to pass. He could only consume two bowls of porridge per day, was unable to rise from bed, and felt immediate tenesmus and bearing-down sensation upon standing, accompanied by dull abdominal pain. Ji Kuai Wan (Accumulation Mass Pill) was given to dissipate the mass. After two consecutive days, a significant amount of bloody debris was passed externally. Additionally, a formula containing Hua Shi (Talcum), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) each at 2 qian; Tao Ren (Semen Persicae), Chuan Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Bai Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Zhi Shi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), Shan Zha (Fructus Crataegi) each at 1 qian; Jiu Qin (Scutellariae Radix prepared with wine), Jiu Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma prepared with wine) each at 0.8 qian; Mu Xiang (Radix Aucklandiae), Sheng Ma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) each at 0.5 qian was administered for four doses. The mass softened, and the abdomen became relaxed. Bahe Wan (Harmonizing Pill) by Danxi was then taken concurrently for one month, reducing the mass by sixty percent. Appetite increased significantly, and no more red or white discharge was observed. Although the hardness and pain of the mass slightly improved, its root remained difficult to eradicate. He had a history of indulgent behavior and unrestricted diet, often relapsing due to dietary indiscretion. Due to long-standing illness causing deficiency of Middle Qi (Spleen/Stomach Qi), he could not tolerate harsh medications. Therefore, Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) plus Xiang Fu (Rhizoma Cyperi), Shan Zha (Fructus Crataegi), Hua Shi (Talcum), Hong Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata Rubra), Mu Xiang (Radix Aucklandiae), and Jiu Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma prepared with wine) was prescribed for regulation and recovery. He was advised: "Your two critical illnesses were both caused by your lack of restraint. I exerted all my efforts to save you, which was not easy. It is truly a matter of destiny and karma. Please do not make such mistakes again. Shao Yong said, 'Delicious food brings disease, and pleasurable deeds bring disaster.' Let this be your warning."
