A pill prescription for treating various meridian disorders postpartum.
Danggui Shen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, washed with wine), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong, washed with wine), Xiangfu Mo (Fructus Cyperi Rotundati, powdered, hairs removed, stir-fried with vinegar, avoid iron vessels), Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Lanceae, soaked in rice wash water and stir-fried), Yanhusuo (Rhizoma Corydalis, stir-fried), Puhuang (Pollen Typhae, stir-fried), Baifuling (Poria, peeled), Taoren (Semen Persicae, peeled and tips removed), Huaishudi (Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata, steamed with wine until clean). Each of the above herbs is used in an amount of two liang; Shanzhuyu (Fructus Corni, pitted), Diyu (Herba Sanguisorbae, washed with wine), Wulingzhi (Faeces Trogopterori, soaked in vinegar, baked on tiles), Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), Zhigancao (Radix Glycyrrhzae Preparata, honey-fried), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, stir-fried with wine), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae, rhizome removed) each are used in an amount of five qian; Sanleng (Rhizoma Sparganii, soaked thoroughly in vinegar, wrapped in paper and roasted) five qian; Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, stir-fried with soil), Qingpi (Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride), Mugua (Fructus Chaenomelis) each three qian; Liangjiang (Rhizoma Alpiniae Officinarum) four qian; Ruxiang (Resina Draconis, de-oiled), Moyao (Resina Myrrhae, de-oiled), Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae) each one qian; Tiantai Wuyao (Fructus Litsae Rhomboideae) one qian five fen; Yimucao (Herba Leonuri) one liang five qian (avoid iron vessels); Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, stir-fried with Ge Fen [shell powder] into beads) eight qian.
Process each of the above medicines cleanly, mix evenly according to the specified weights, grind into an extremely fine powder, and use Dahuang Gao (Rhubarb Paste) as a binder to form pills.
Jinwen Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, high-quality variety with brocade-like texture) one jin (remove black skin, grind to extremely fine powder), Sumu (Lignum Santali Rubrum) three liang (split into pieces), boil in five bowls of river water to obtain three bowls of decoction; Honghua (Flos Carthami Tinctorii) three liang (stir-fry until yellow, add one large pot of good wine and boil together until reduced to six or seven bowls, filter dregs and retain juice); additionally, take three sheng of Heidou (Semen Sojae Preparatum), boil in river water to obtain three bowls of juice.
When preparing this medicine, one must be devout and sincere. It is essential to avoid being seen by women, chickens, dogs, or those wearing mourning clothes for the prescription to be effective. First, place the Dahuang powder into a pot, add five bowls of rice vinegar, stir well, and boil until it reaches the consistency where a drop forms a bead ("drip becomes a bead"). Then add four or five more bowls of vinegar and continue boiling. Repeat this process three times to obtain the paste. Immediately add the Honghua wine, Sumu decoction, and Heidou juice to dissolve the Dahuang paste, and boil again until it becomes a thick paste. Remove from heat and store in a ceramic basin. Dry the burnt residue at the bottom of the pot (guoba), grind it into powder, and mix it evenly with the previously prepared Zisheng Dan powder. Finally, use the Dahuang paste to bind the mixture into pills the size of a bullet. For use, grind one pill into a fine powder, mix with good wine, and take orally at any time. The effect is miraculous! It applies to various postpartum conditions. The guiding herbs and specific applications are listed below.
1. Treatment for fetal death in utero. If the pregnant woman contracts a disease, and within six to seven days the pathogen transmits to the zang-fu organs causing extreme heat, leading to fetal death retained in the body, falling below the umbilicus and unable to separate, life is in imminent danger. Urgently take three pills; if chest qi becomes hot, the fetus will be expelled.
2. Due to fetal qi formation, the fetus consumes maternal blood. Near term, residual blood coagulates into clumps, commonly called "Ghost Pillow" (Guizhen). During labor, the Ghost Pillow ruptures first, and blood wraps around the fetus, causing difficult labor. This medicine removes stagnant blood from the uterus immediately, allowing delivery within moments. It is also applicable to breech presentation, malpresentation, and retained placenta.
3. Retained placenta. After mother and child have separated, the mother's birth blood infiltrates clothing and bedding, becoming distended by blood, thus preventing the placenta from expelling. This causes inability to eat or drink, abdominal distension and fullness, irritability, and urgency. Dissolve and take three pills; stagnant blood in the uterus is removed, and the placenta falls naturally.
4. Postpartum blood syncope. Inability to get out of bed, blurred vision. Three days postpartum, qi and blood are unstable; blood returns to the five zang organs and rushes to the liver. If physicians do not recognize this, they call it "Dark Wind" (Anfeng). Using this pill will cure it.
5. Postpartum dry mouth and heart oppression. Six to seven days postpartum, due to unstable maternal blood and qi, after eating noodles or similar foods on the third day, blood stasis accumulates in the heart, causing irritability and thirst. Physicians call this "chest and epigastric fullness." Taking this pill will cure it.
6. Postpartum alternating chills and fever resembling malaria. Due to postpartum weakness and emaciation, blood stasis in the heart and lungs causes heat; heat entering the spleen and stomach causes chills. Extreme thirst ensues. Those who do not recognize this call it malaria, causing much harm through misdiagnosis. Taking this pill is effective.
7. Postpartum edema of the four limbs. Stagnant blood travels to the five zang organs, filling the four limbs, stagnating and failing to circulate, transforming into edema. Those who do not recognize this call it water edema, not knowing that water edema differs from blood edema. Water edema presents with shortness of breath and scanty urination; blood edema presents with abdominal fullness and cold limbs. Taking this pill removes stagnant blood; subsequently, other medicines should be taken to regulate qi and blood.
8. Postpartum blood-pathogen resembling hallucinations of ghosts, mania, and incoherent speech. Postpartum blood-pathogen, with hot qi rushing to the heart, triggered by external stimuli, causing mental restlessness and manic speech. If physicians do not recognize this and call it wind-pathogen, it is a mistake. Urgently take this pill to treat it.
9. Postpartum aphasia. The heart has seven holes and three hairs; stagnant blood enters the heart and blocks it, preventing speech. Physicians who do not recognize this call it "Depletion of Yin and Yang." Although aphasia is difficult to treat, one must ascertain whether the pregnant woman's meridians are flowing or blocked, smooth or obstructed, causing heart qi to wander and flow into the heart orifices. Taking this pill will cure it.
10. Postpartum diarrhea and dysentery. Within a month postpartum, if the pregnant woman mistakenly eats sour, salty, cold, or hard foods, these clash with blood and enter the large intestine, failing to digest. This may result in purging pus and blood or a sensation of foul irritation without relief. Taking this pill will cure it.
11. Postpartum soreness and pain in bone joints. During childbirth, all bones and joints open up. Postpartum, stagnant blood flows into various areas, stays for a long time, aggregates, and does not disperse, causing soreness and pain in all joints. Those who do not recognize this treat it as wind-dampness, causing much harm. But taking this pill will resolve the coagulated blood and cure it.
12. Postpartum hematuria resembling chicken liver. Due to improper care during pregnancy, unsuitable diet, and combined with depression and anger, stagnant blood flows into the small intestine, blocking the urinary passage, causing painful and difficult urination. The clot resembles a chicken liver. If it flows into the large intestine, it leads to severe constipation which is difficult to treat. Those who do not recognize this call it "five zang dripping." Damaging the heart and liver leads to blood stasis forming clumps like chicken liver. One must not ignore that stagnant blood entering the intestines blocks the water and grain passages, causing this condition. Taking this pill will cure it.
13. Postpartum metrorrhagia (Bengzhong). Between the periods when postpartum stagnant blood and evil qi have not stopped, one should take medicine to regulate the five zang organs. Or, if one eats sour, salty, cold, raw, hot, or varied foods, causing Ying and Wei to fail to harmonize, the uterus begins to bleed profusely (Benglou). The color and shape resemble liver tissue, accompanied by tidal fever throughout the body, stiffness in the back and shoulders, and oppression in the chest and middle jiao. Physicians who do not recognize this call it Bengzhong. However, when a woman's menstrual period is about to arrive and flows violently without stopping, or is overdue excessively, it is called Benglou. Now, the pregnant woman's blood and qi are actively circulating, but due to lack of proper care, this disease arises. Taking three pills of this medicine will cure it.
14. Postpartum epigastric qi rebellion and unsteady vomiting. Blood stagnates in the spleen and stomach postpartum; food accumulation and rebellious qi rushing to the heart cause imbalance, epigastric distension, and excessive vomiting. Those who do not recognize this call it "Fanwei" (Reversal Stomach/Regurgitation). Fanwei is primarily related to grain qi; the stomach likes to receive but lacks movement, damaging the stomach and heart so it cannot tolerate food and drink. In pregnant women, blood stagnates in the spleen, and heart qi clashes causing vomiting and rebellion; how can this be called Fanwei? Taking two or three pills of this medicine will cure it. It is 100% effective.
15. Postpartum cough, alternating cold and heat in the four limbs, heart oppression, dry mouth, whole-body irritability, frequent startling dreams, physical weakness and lack of strength, absence of menstruation named "Blood Closure" (Xuebi). Abdominal pain with red face makes it difficult to treat. It transforms into bone-steaming consumption, requiring careful treatment. If this pill does not work, even with skills of rebirth, it cannot be cured.
16. Postpartum throat sound resembling a toad. Stagnant blood rushes to and blocks the heart, transferring to the lungs. The lungs govern qi; blood rushes to the heart, and qi and blood jointly form a lump in the throat, making a sound like a toad croaking, which people find strange. Ten out of ten patients with this symptom die; taking this pill can cure it.
17. Postpartum sallow complexion, dry tongue, bleeding from nose and mouth, blood spots all over the body forming spots around the head. Due to postpartum blood decay, the five zang and six fu organs become full, and blood flows into the skin and muscles. Stagnant blood travels to the four limbs; heat binds and stops, failing to return, hence this fearful and terrifying disease. Ten out of ten patients die. Taking this pill can cure it.
18. Postpartum difficulty in defecation, lower back pain resembling opisthotonos (arched back). Beyond one hundred days of pregnancy, blood and qi are full. Now, within the confinement period, after seven days, eating oily, flour-based, and palatable foods causes irritability and restlessness. Delaying medication and engaging in sexual intercourse, or sitting/lying in the wind after a long illness for temporary comfort, refusing to abstain from sex for recovery, naturally leads to this disease. Urgently take this pill to cure it.
Treats postpartum red and astringent urine, and sluggish, obstructed stool. Taking this pill will cure it.
Treats obstructed menses. Women's menses are like irrigation ditches; if ditches are blocked, water cannot flow; if women's qi is blocked, menses do not flow. One must not delay and nurture the disease at the cost of one's life; urgently take this pill to unblock it, preserving heavenly harmony and achieving the beauty of natural transformation. How wonderful! How miraculous!
Treats obstinate obstruction of menses in unmarried girls. Unmarried girls' meridians differ from married women's; they hide in the Bao Luo (uterine network) and gradually enter the uterus. They begin to know human affairs when appearing at thirteen or fourteen years old. If emotions (joy, anger) or environmental factors (cold, dampness, heat, warmth) are inappropriate, menses become obstructed. "Gu" means dried up. An unmarried girl's body is similarly affected. The I Ching says: "Heaven One generates Water, Earth Six completes it." First take Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) for three to five doses to generate Gui Shui (menstrual blood) in the uterus, then take this pill to guide and unblock. Do not let quack doctors treat it as Lao Zhai (consumption/tuberculosis). See Siwu Tang formula in Symptom 2.
